You wouldn't think this but CBS Radio NYC is making more money then Clear Channel NYC. This as CBS Radio NYC has three stations doing poorly WNEW, WCBS-FM, WFNY. But where CBS is getting the money from is WFAN 660, WCBS 880, and WINS 1010.

CBS Radio New York City:
$259,600

Clear Channel New York City:
$202,800

And in an effort to go from fourth back to first in 2006, WLTW has announced that they will be going with all Christmas music begining the day after Easter : )

I am pretty positive that Clear Channel makes more money on the operations in NY than CBS does.

Re: New York vs. Los Angeles

New York is a much bigger market than Los Angeles (and even significantly bigger if you combine Los Angeles and Riverside-San Bernardino into one market) so how come Los Angeles has more stations in the top ten than New York? Based on the market populations I would expect something more like 6 from New York, 3 from Los Angeles, and 1 from Chicago.

LA is the bigger billing market... has been for a long time.

LA 2005 revenues were $1.07 billion, while NY was $840 million., NY has had no growth since 2000 while LA has grown by 15% in that period.

Dave, I'm curious as to your opinions on why there is such a disparity in revenues between LA & NY?

I would imagine thast a lot has to do with the spread out nature of the LA market, and the fact that such a huge percentage of people are not from LA...so they are good ad prospects. Add the low use of in-car radio in NY (due to public transportation) and the perception that the NE is not a growth market situation, and there is a bit of each in the difference.

LA is less of a traditional media market, with nowhere near the newspaper penetration of the big NY dialies and suburban papers, so some may be less money per capita going to print. The fact that 70% of the market is ethnic or immigrant (or both) also makes radio better than print, especially with some gorups not being strong print consumers.

Yahoo! says it is 157.3 miles from West Long Branch, NJ to Orient Point, NY. Both are in the New York market so the New York market is spread out. Water makes the trip on roads longer than the geographical distance between the two towns but it's still a long distance.
As for more people using car radios to commute to and from work in Los Angeles versus using public transportation in New York, I'd be interested in seeing what percent of all revenue came from morning and afternoon drive hours for the two markets to see if it is much higher in Los Angeles.

At drive time, Calabasas to San Juan capistrano is a 3 hour drive, too... also over 100 miles.

The issue is that only 25% of NY radio listening is in cars, while it is 31% in LA. That explains quite a bit of the differnece.

In most big cities, the listening from about 5 AM to 7 to 8 PM is very near the same levels, and billings in all those hours on a well sold station should be compzarable.

Don't cry for Lite FM. I imagine the PROFIT margin there is about 60-65% versus CBS' bloatedtalent, technical, editorial staff wages. Dollar for dollar LTW is the best bang for the buck inradio!

CBS Radio New York City:$259,600Clear Channel New York City:$202,800CBS also has a huge overhead with their personalities, news operations, and sports deals at WCBS, WINS, and WFAN (and also did last year with Stern at WXRK when they racked up those numbers). My guess is that both clusters are dropping similar dollars to the bottom line (the one that counts) and that the CC cluster may actually be cashflowing more.
