Clear Channel buying Mix 98.5?

A post on the Connecticut board says Clear Channel is selling two stations in Hartford so they can get their hands on two stations in other markets...one of those stations being Mix 98.5 (WBMX). Anyone else hear of this? Could this be good news? Bad news? No comment? Knowing the reputation of Clear Channel, I don't think it's good news. I've never been a Clear Channel employee, so I would not know first hand how they operate.

Look more closely at the Connecticut board, you'll see that the post you're referring to was an April Fools joke.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet, especially anything dated 4/1.

This is why I hate these April fools posts. Yeah, they have some dated value, but they also cause needless false speculation.

And you know how I hate needless false speculation.

This specific one was just very stupid. It wasn't as if they were supposing WBMX was flipping to polka; they were suggesting a sale that actually makes sense (as CC has long wanted another Boston FM).

Another online radio April Fool's prank -- Re: Clear Channel buying Mix 98.5?

I noticed another online radio April Fool's prank over at www.Siriusbackstage.com.

And, oddly enough perhaps, this one also involved Clear Channel, albeit indirectly this time.

The website claimed that Sirius, not to be outdone by XM, will be introducing commercials on five streams: Sirius Hits 1, Movin' Easy, The Pulse, New Country and, as soon as the "temporary" Rolling Stones Radio stream ends, The Globe.

The Clear Channel connection is obviously the fact that XM, in compliance with an arbitration settlement agreement, is allowing Clear Channel to air commercials on the streams it has a hand in. (That, unfortunately, is not an April Fool's Day prank, although it still could arguably be regarded as folly... Arbitraitor, anyone?)

Re: Clear Channel

The only ways Clear Channel will likely be able to acquire more stations in the Boston area would be:

(1) If CC purchases the Greater Media station (probably, but not officially announced as, WKLB-99.5) that will have to be spun-off in order for Greater Media to buy WCRB-102.5.

(2) Or if Greater Media decides at some point in the distant future to sell-off all their Boston-area radio stations. Were current ownership rules still in effect at that time (we're probably talking about 5-10-15 years sown the road), CC would only be able to acquire two or three of them, depending on whether they purchase the station Greater Media is about to spin-off.

No, the only way it is going to happen is...
IT WON'T!
So get over it...

Well, Greater Media will have to sell off off one of their stations when they close on WCRB unless they create a deal and can convince the FCC that the Red Sox owning 25% of WBOS is enough to get around the ownership limits, which isn't very likely.

Odds are, 99.5 is for sale. And why wouldn't CC want it?

Alwasy ready with the obvious. Thank you as always for your insightful regurgitation of what everyone already knows.
