Clear Channel buys 4 Cape stations

>>Cape Cod, MA: News/Talk 95.1 WXTK, Sports 96.3 WEII, Classic Hits “Cool 102” 101.9 WCIB, and Hot AC 106.1 WCOD

Changes at any? Would think not at the first two at least (with 96.3 they prob make money, have a contract w/ Entercom and w/ Sox, etc). Maybe they'd substitute Glenn Beck on 95.1 for Ingraham late mornings to get yet another CC/Premiere show on.
Speaking of which, on June 1 supposedly WUFC 1510 will switch to lifestyle/libertarian talk incl. Glenn Beck while some former Michael Graham affiliates had picked up delayed Beck recently. Not sure if that will continue if Beck does indeed wind up on 1510. Beck is aired delayed at noon on WBNW 1120 in Concord/ WESO 970 in Southbridge/WPLM (AM) 1390 in Plymouth

I am guessing WCIB will become just like B101, and COD will become just like Coast. Very sad, especially for Cool 102. Sure gonna miss hearing all the "oh wow" songs that I don't think any other station plays.

This is terrible, terrible news. Although Cool 102 has sounded over-PPM'd in recent years, at least it is live and local. I feel badly for all the jocks on these stations that will lose their jobs. And as ssetta mentioned, their unique formats will also be missed. Sadly, I am sure that Cool 102 and B101, whose signals have tremendous overlap, will carry nearly identical programming - from songs to Premium Choice jocks. What a waste; Cool 102 has one of the most impressive FM signals in New England.

Anyone think that Cheap Channel might actually opt for a B101 simulcast on Cool 102? They are so close in dial position, and Cool has excellent reception through much of Rhode Island.

Well, well, well, it would appear I'm not the only one who thinks that anytime CC gets its dirty paws on some prime property they run it into the ground.

I'm with you, Scott; this is terrible news since it means job losses and homogenization.

Ah boo hoo hoo..

You gonna cry? It's THEIR wealth. Clear Channel can purchase whatever station they want. And they've actually added more jobs in recent years. Oh, and if they ARE laying people off, then tough.

You guys welcome this type of free market capitalism in radio. You reap what you sow. Live and local radio is dead because you guys embraced Clear Channel and Entercom.

That was what attracted me to apply for (and landed) the WCIB gig in 2000. I had never worked at a station where, inside of an hour, I would spin Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Buffett, Eric Clapton, Bob Marley, The Rolling Stones, Shawn Colvin, The Moody Blues....you get the picture. The music during my tenure (2000-2003) was well-programmed by Steve McVie & Larry Egan - and the ratings bore that out.

I still listen to Cool 102 on-line and, even though the music has been tweaked a bit over the past decade, it's still a great station. I'm hoping that CC, when they take over, leaves it as is. WCIB has become a Cape Cod staple and it would be a shame if it morphed towards a B-101 (which is a damn fine station), taking away a unique and successful identity.

I really like Joe and John in the am, good mix together and rare for 2 guys versus a guy/gal am show. I know they both have other roles at the station(s) so hopefully that is left in tact.

B101 is a damn good station? It sounds like every other Premium Choice CC Classic Hits station. Besides the 6-10 AM block, the other 20 hours of the day are all Premium Choice.

Cool 102 has a strong local flavor. CC's pattern, especially in anything other than the largest markets, is to allow one station to be locally programmed (and with a lot of voice-tracking). In Providence, that one station is WHJY. I would venture that all the local Cool and COD jocks will be out, unfortunately, and replaced with Premium Choice.

A straight-up simulcast is somewhere between highly unlikely and not a chance in hell. Spot radio never has been, and probably never will be, bought regionally. A move like that would price Cape Cod business out of doing business with WCIB while adding little value to B-101. If you're referring to WCIB airing the same Premium Choice stuff that's on B-101 with its own stabs and spots, I'd think that would be more likely. Of course, as Marc mentions, that assumes Clear Channel will keep the Cape Cod stations. I tend to think they will, but I don't think anyone can guarantee it.

You may not like it, Scott, but the ratings (and assuming billing) are just fine. It is part of the landscape we reside in, for better or worse.

I understand that, BostonRandy. I was just offering a subjective view. I am guessing that we'll see the exact same jock lineup on B101 and Cool (except for mornings), and they exact same Premium Choice song offerings. B101 is well-suited to the Providence market. But there are many places that one can hear the same Premium Choice jocks and the exact same songs. For example, my home base of Florida has a semi-local for me, 103.7 WQOL. The station has nearly the exact Premium Choice lineup as B101.

Scott -

I hope that CC doesn't mess with Cool 102 or any of the soon-to-be former Qantum stations a bit. I, fully, understand the business yet I have many former co-workers and friends who work on the stations that CC is acquiring. The WCIB signal covers most of Rhode Island year-round and I do wonder if having the Premium Choice format on two stations separated by 0.4 MHz (even though Cool serves the Cape market first and foremost) could be counter-productive to B-101, ratings-wise. Keep in mind, 10-15 years ago, WCIB would pull a 1.7-2.4 in the Providence market. Just something to consider.

Randy, I remember, about 10-15 years ago, that Cool 102 also used to target the New Bedford-Fall River area (in addition to their home base). I also remember, in the past, hearing Rhode Island political candidates advertising on Cool 102. It would be quite awkward to have the same Premium Choice format and jocks a mere 0.4 MHz apart. Are there any other nearby markets in which CC does this with stations of similar format? In areas in which Q105 and 92 Pro FM overlap, one can hear Ralphie Aversa do simultaneous voice-tracked night shifts. But then again, there isn't nearly as big an overlap between those stations as between B101 and Cool 102.

Scott: I was at Cool 102 from 2000-2003 and, IIRC, New Bedford was a secondary COL. A dear friend lived in New Bedford and I would visit him often and was proud that I heard Cool being played in many shops around town. We had many regular listeners from all over RI and it was amazing to get response from that far away on a regular basis - even when we had to drop the internet stream in 2001. One listener from Narragansett, in particular, paid me the ultimate compliment one afternoon by comparing me to his fave NYC jock during his teen years.

Sounds like you had a nice run at Cool 102, Randy.

If I remember correctly, Cool has one of the best FM signals in New Bedford and Fall River.

You know, when I listen to WSNE-FM and hear a CC jock on in morning drive, I know that the station's on its way out. We've got to sue Clear Channel and get them put out of business.
