Clear Channel Buys Orlando-Area Translators

From All Access:

Clear Channel Buys Orlando-Area Translators

REACH COMMUNICATIONS, INC. is selling FM translators W246BO/DELTONA, FL and W246BT/CLERMONT, FL to CLEAR CHANNEL BROADCASTING LICENSES, INC. for $125,000. The two co-channel translators are listed as scheduled to carry CLEAR CHANNEL Active Rock WJRR/ORLANDO as the primary signal; WJRR also airs Sports WYGM-A (740 THE GAME)/ORLANDO on its HD-2 channel.

So...which format will the translators serve? I say WYGM.

According to Radio Locator W246BT-FM 97.1 in Clermont already carries CC's "Rumba 100.3".

They have been airing Reach-FM for awhile. Not sure what they are airing now as the signal barely makes it to the city of Clermont, despite it being the COL. WSUN comes in better most of the time.

It's all about shuffling the deck with the HD2's and the translators. Litter the dial with as many translators as you can rebroadcasting 540 and 740 or HD2s like Smooth Jazz or something else. Just because it says on record WJRR or WRUM doesn't mean they can't move the HD2s around so the translators are broadcasting the signal they are legally supposed to be connected too. It's so stupid. How about this idea? Program your full power stations properly and you won't have to worry about competition littering the dial confusing the listeners.

Looks like neither has been upgraded to 250 watts. Clear Channel will probably go for that and then rebroadcast WYGM just like CC is doing in Tampa with WDAE. Imaging becomes, "And now on FM at 97.1". Then you turn to it and have a laugh at the poor reception in metro Orlando.

If there are any tall structures such as an existing tower near downtown or a tall building in downtwon Orando, ideally 1,000 feet +/- to support the antenna, with the full 250 watts the translator will have a signal comparable to a class A FM. Its the lower powered translators operating with micro-power on short towers of 100 +/- feet that provide sub par coverage.

Another example of how CC's main objective is frequently to limit competition.

How about Urban? CC runs Premium Choice Urban translator stations in Birmingham, Chattanooga, Biloxi and Lexington.

Orlando is a PPM market and urban formats (other than adult urban such as WCFB) does not rate well in PPM markets. On the other hand urban performs well in diary markets. Unlike Orlando, Brimingham, Chattanooga and Lexington are all diary markets. This is one reason WJHM has "adjusted" its programming from Urban - Hop Hop to Rhythmic CHR.
