Clear Channel Buys RCS...Selector

Well CCC has gobbled up something else. Radio Computing Services has been obtained by Clear Channel. I'm wondering if they're any non-Clear Cannel programmers/managers/owners out there who are now concerned about the competition having access to their Selector databases. Also, there's probably some owners who'll detest paying CCC for anything, either directly or indirectly. Do you think a bunch of programmers will have to start learning new music software? Just a thought.

It's hard to imagine how this was a good move for Clear Channel. I would think it might well open the door to competition.

Selector

A brilliant move. What competitor do you believe could/would try to go head-to-
head with far and away THE #1 music scheduling software? Selector is so far ahead of #2 and beyond it would take years with dramatically better scheduler to even begin to affect RCS.

Plus, most Programmers are so comfortable and accustomed to Selector, good luck getting many to even consider changing.

Here we disagree. I use Music Master in all our stations and all the ones I consult, and the new Widows version is far better than Selector.

KLVE in LA has been a Music Master station since it first went #1 in 1995... which is when we switched to Music Master.

There is an option for those who don't want to give money to The Borg. Check out www.mmwin.com.

Clear Channel owns the State News Networks in both states I operate in, and I send them a check every month. I have no choice. But, since they do not compete with me, it's not a major issue.

If I did in fact compete with them in any of my markets, I wouldn't be too hot on buying their music scheduling software. Just like I woulnd't consider using Prophet automation. (of course, Prophet is crap anyway)

I think this acquisition is similar to their purchase of Prophet a few years ago. Except that this time they are actually acquiring a company with a great product. I'll still stick with my Music Master though.

Selector

I never said it was the BEST- I'm saying it's an accepted standard for most and too many Programmers (some of THE most resistent of all in radio to any kind of change) will stick with it, no matter what.

McDonalds' food is only OK in my book and several other fast food chains have served better quality food for years, yet McDonald's remains #1. It's not because they serve the best food but largely because they've become such an automatic habit for so many over the years.

Brilliant... in the way it was brilliant to buy SFX and then sell it at a huge loss years later in my opinion.... ;-)

Yahoo was far and away the number one search engine... until a little company called "Google" came along. Being number one is no assurance of staying number one.

Selector already has competitors. I would think twice about feeding and becoming dependepent upon my competitor.

Re: Selector

Music Gen is a lot more user friendly then Selector.

My station has NexGen, and we also use MusicGen

It doesn't matter what we think - we're not the corporate contract purchasers

I'd bet that a lot of stations/companies probably have a contract that only Selector would be used at all their stations... and as long as the higher ups at the broadcasting companies dictate what software is used by their stations, I seriously doubt that much will change.

For example (on another similar issue at a non-radio job), I asked my Boss's boss if we've ever considered switching to another web browser/e-mail suite due to IE and Outlook's issues... the answer I got was "we're invested in Microsoft."

Probably, the answer that those actually in radio concerned about this will hear 'we're invested in Selector.'<P ID="signature">______________

Speaking of the evil Microsoft....

Tell him that better browsers, including Netscape, are free.

Sun's Star Office is very inexpensive ($69) and
compatible with MS office. And I just read that Sun
will be making more of its apps free.

"StarOffice 8 software is fully compatible with
Microsoft Office file formats, so you can easily
share documents with friends or co-workers."

FWIW.

Plus a <font color=green>free 90-day trial</font> I just
discovered after posting the above:

Selector

I think most of us would be interested to hear the differences and why you like Music Gen vs. Selector (it's pretty new and most of us have not used it).
