Clear Channel continues to commit AM suicide

I flipped on WONE the other day. I seldom check them out as I'm not a fan of Fox Sports. I heard 2 PSA's, one talking about making a new years resolution and one about filing your income taxes online. I'd say those were a bit out of date. Certainly sounded odd to me. Do they not put end dates on things at CC??? Do they subscribe to the theory "if there's sound on the air, all is okay?" No wonder AM listening is so miniscule on most stations anymore.

I've heard spots one local, running on top of ESPN programming on 1530 at night. They don't care at all especially during non peak listening hours. Everthing is moving to their IHeartRadio platform.

It's a chicken and egg thing, virtually nobody under 40 or 50 listens to AM radio these days, so the huge conglomerates that own them don't care about the on-air product, running god-awful PSAs and other unlistenable garbage, driving the few listeners they have away, so the cycle perpetuates itself.

If you really want to hear something worse though, there have been a lot of online streams of radio stations that continue the spot break even after programming is back, so you'll miss half a segment. It's enraging and I place the blame squarely on AFTRA.

It's not really AFTRA, it's the fact you're asking engineers at CC, Cumulus to also be the IT guy who has to make sure that their computer automation is set up correctly so that problems like you describe won't happen. It comes down to one or two guys wearing many hats.

If I am not mistaken it would be the PD or Traffic to ensure the ad insertion coverup matches up with the amount of spots loaded in that spot block. [If the ad cover up is mapped right it should be pretty much seamless... 4 minutes of filler to cover 4 minutes of spots etc..] .. I wouldn't put blame on IT or Engineering though... more on the programming side of things not to ensure that they are filling only when needed.. I know up here in Columbus, Clear Channel does pretty well making sure things are seamless.. and when I noticed once (back around Christmas time) that things where a few seconds off (local ad cover up was starting a few seconds late and ending a few seconds late I brought it up to their PD and he had it fixed before end of day).

Of course considering most PD's and Traffic departments are spitting out logs for many stations.. I can see why these mistakes happen (even if not acceptable).

Are you honestly saying that Tracy Jones and Eddie Fingers are programming toward the 40+ demographic? Is that what they think those folks will find entertaining?

Clear Channel is a joke when it comes to AM.

"Real Oldies 1530 WSAI" was programmed well in spite of the repetition....then BOOM they switch 1530 to progreeive talk, then Fox sports....then ESPN sports....oh well at least they moved the WCKY callsign back to where it rightly belongs.

WIZE is no longer simulcasting WONE....but is using a sattellite feed from Dayton over (I venture to guess) an equalized phone loop or T1 line. Any local news and high school sports for Springfield this year? Probably not.

WLW should be now nicknamed "the awful one." (Powell Crosley is rolling over his grave I am sure.)

I'm not aware of an AFTRA represented station anywhere in Central or Southern Ohio. The union left Cincinnati many...many years ago.

That's not the issue, it's the problem of stations having to run filler on the online streams because the union voice actors that show up in commercials (probably national spots more so than local) wanted more money if a spot was aired online. It adds another layer of complexity because that software has to be tied in properly to the automation system or the fill will keep airing over top of the programming when it returns from the break.

OK, I misunderstood your thought. My two cents...

A good company will purchase the needed software to correctly cover such spots. And, if they are a good company, their people will care enough to provide sufficient content to cover breaks as needed.

The problem is: some companies don't give a crap. And that attitude trickles down to the employees eventually. In other cases, the employees are too overburdened by management to really care about the online stream. I agree none of that is good.

Most stations do not make money with their online streams, and that may be a contributor to the problem. If they made money, perhaps the companies would care more and devote more attention to them, or make them a higher priority. The sad-but-true reality of radio today.
