CLEAR CHANNEL - CRASH AND BURN

Anyone have a look at the Los Angeles Board recently? Clear Channel has initiated a freeze on EVERYTHING. Don't hire anyone new. Don't spend money on anything new.... etc etc etc. It's my best guess that it's only a matter of time before Clear Channel starts selling off stations. How much time before the whole company collapses? If you are looking for a job in radio, this is not the company that you want to work for. I'm just wondering how a company who virtually owns "Radio" in this country can now barely pay it's bills. Sad Sad Sad. Click the link below to read more.

These are business decisions and what's behind it all is probably much more complicated than even employees can fathom. Clear Channel will survive. I agree that it's not the place you want to work but if there were CCU jobs in Providence you can bet people would chomp at the bit to get them because no one looks at the long term anymore when it comes to their careers. It's impossible to do that anyway. What I can't fathom, unless there was more behind it than meets the eye, is the jumps from Cat Country to CCU in 2006. Granted the situation then wasn't what it is now but even then there was an annual ritualistic house cleaning. I can see younger people not afraid to lose their jobs and willing to pack a suitcase every other year making such moves but that kind of radio gypsy attitude should be out of anyone's system once they're over 30.

I also think when things get better for the industry you still won't see things the way they were. What's explained as temporary measures becomes permanent.Do you really think after things settle that HJY is suddenly going to hire a killer night rock jock or that B101 will suddenly be staffed live and locally 6AM to midnight?NO!This will become the norm.

Unfortunately I agree with everything you've said. Drastic measures will soon be acepted as being the norm. Bad radio will become the norm. Gone are the days when radio was a career you could really be proud of. Now the bar has been lowered and quality has clearly suffered. Will there ever be another Casey Kasem or Wolfman Jack? Do the jocks of today even know who Wolfman Jack was? It's no longer the Radio that we grew up.

Forget Wolfman Jack. That kind of schtick is yesterday. It's nostalgia and won't work nowadays. As far as Kasem other than being the voice for AT40 for years I never thought there was anything special there but I don't know what kind of work he did outside of that show. Anyone with a smooth delivery could do AT40. Today's audiences, especially in a market like Providence, don't want much more than background noise from their radios. They're not listening attentively enough to anything other than the jocks they expect more from. That's basically those in morning drive and possibly Charles in the afternoon who has a schtick of his own. You can't force feed creativity on the masses if they're going to spit it up at you. Not long ago a non-radio person I know told me she tried to win Hannah Montana tickets for her daughter but never was able to. When I asked on what station she didn't remember. There you have it.

Do you think Clear Channel is the only company with this policy in force right now? This is happening at companies large and small..what's interesting to me is how the policy of syndicated morning show+10-4 Midday Shift+tracked night show is becoming the norm in large Clear Channel markets..

I'm curious as to what happens if the FCC decides to implement the 24 hour staffing rule..how many stations might start signing off at midnight as a general rule seven days a week?

McRadio, There is a cause and effect here...the reason people only look at radio as background is because owners have made the product nothing more than background....give people something to listen to, they listen...i see happen at stations still

I think you are right. Build it and they will come. I would love to see someone build a good radio show. That hasn't happened in ages.

You may see it happening at stations but those are stations where listeners have come to expect it and probably in markets different than Providence. You're not wrong in saying owners have caused it. Now audiences have become numb but listen anyway. Is there any reason for B101 or Coast to do anything more than what they're doing after 10AM? Is there any reason for PRO-FM not to hire some wild night jock? And on and on and on? No there's no reason if people listen anyway. I checked your profile and looked at some of your other posts. You're not clueless and you're into good radio but this is uncompetitive Providence. The extra effort and extra money won't pay off. Look even at any potential talent pool. Look at newcomers in the business. Do you see that they're getting in because they honestly feel they have talent that goes beyond using a computer? No. They're getting in because it looks like fun.

When Clear Channel sells some stations, and new and local owners come in. Perhaps then it would be worth while to try to grab a gig at the mighty clear channel. I would like to see Coast FM be sold. The station has a ton of potentional. It has the audiences
