The media , newspapers, blogs, etc. call them layoffs. Ha Ha...that's really funny. These people are not being laid off...they are being Fired! They will never get their jobs back!
For years I foolishly I have been saying "fired"....(first time was 1981)
I will now use LAYED OFF ...now that the industry is "catching up".
Anyway...for you "Lay-off" newbies:
Good things about getting FIR...I mean Layed Off:
NO BOSS
NO STUPID HEALTH INSURANCE FORMS to fill out (pain = clarity) lol
NO 401k (down 47 %) lol
More time with family(if you still have one)
NO BOSS
LESS MONEY ( remember LESS is MORE)
Here's some free advice...because you won't be able to afford crap in a few months....
YOU can benefit from the CC CUTTING THOUSANDS headline...unlike some of us who Really didn't see it comin'.
So basically-if your show blew with bad numbers(or you got fired WITH CAUSE-you deserved it)..you still get to say...you were swept up in a storm of horrible recessionary layoffs. God Save America !
Remember...Being out of work is not easy -that's why some people WILL DO ALMOST ANYTHING TO STAY EMPLOYED HOWEVER.... IT'S NEVER AS BAD AS YOU THINK.....IT'S RADIO....FOR GOD'S SAKE...and have you heard it lately ?
You'll feel like a fish outta water for a while..especially if you stay in the same market. Don't expect help "relocating" to a competitor-especially if you're good. Why would the people that layed you off help their competition ?
Don't go to the newspaper and call everybody a turd...bad press is bad..good press is good. (see my website)
If you're leaving with good ratings....remember...that means there are/were thousands of people who know you and dig "whatever you did" compared to the one or two people that "layed you off"....don't take it out on the audience...epsecially if they've been paying for your house over the last 10 to 15 years.
Don't threaten anybody....you can't get a good job if you're somebody's prison girlfriend...well maybe..nevermind.
STAY VISIBLE...not in a stalky kind of way.... BUT if you plan on staying in the market...don't go underground and become a drunk bitter crack addict....THAT'S WHAT THE INDUSTRY EXPECTS YOU DO. Then they can say "see"?
Don't try to explain to someone who is not in radio....they don't get it. They either think we're all poor or we're all rich. They have no concept of how the industry is run...just like most of us don't get Chicago politics.
and By the Way...there is NOT a lot of Hiring going on right now...in case you're wondering why there's no repsonse on that mp3..(I know. I know...it doesn't matter who slept with whom.....there's a recession !)
When I got LAYED OFF from WGRR-FM Cincy..1991.....I sent out 138 tapes and resumes.
got 3 offers. One of them was a one week audition at WAEB-FM...that turned into 2 weeks
then 15 years. That's the old school way of getting a gig. lol
Hopefully your kids are young enough where they see extra time with YOU as a plus...and not an awkward explanation... Why is Daddy picking us up?- at swimming, soccer and PTA etc...and Mommy is workin etc.
When B104 cut me in Sept 2006, my sons were 2 & 5 years old so they couldn't care less if my name was Ken Matthews in the morning or doofus. Today I'm carving a Pinewood derby car and yesterday we watched Obama's parade together. Yes We Did !
My 7 year old still can't believe the presidents daughters get to watch an entire parade from their front yard !

CC cut close to 2,000 people on Inauguration Day ON PURPOSE, hoping that the news would get buried...and yes, they totally got away with it. The NY Post and the Wall St Journal exposed the plan prior to D Day, but nobody else in the mass media mentioned it, as far as I know. There were reports FROM THE INSIDE that lists of cut employees were read OVER THE INTERCOM in some markets that day, with the employees being asked to file out of the building immediately under the watch of local police. They were told that their personal belongings would be rounded up by the survivors and mailed to them. Ridiculous. With so many people being fired on one day from the same company you also got reports of some married couples who both worked for the same cluster and were both fired. In a heartbeat they went from 2 salaries to NEITHER of them being able to provide for their kids. This is a company that has lost all perspective on what it means to be HUMAN. Companies are not some inanimate thing: they are made up of PEOPLE.
Also from the inside: CC still plans on firing all part-timers in markets 50 and smaller at some point in the future. That plan was already decided on before The Great Inauguration Day Slaughter. Obviously, that includes Allentown (#69) and Reading (#130).
