Clear Channel - Destroyer of Heritage

Can we now officially say that Clear Channel is the destroyer of Heritage after killing 96 Rock after 32 years, and Peach/Lite after 34 years. Shame on them.

I guess this leaves V-103 as the longest running station on FM after 34 years with the same format (not the same kind of music mind you but their premise is the same). I'm sure if CC got their grubby hands on V, they would destroy that station as well.

Why not. They did it to KLOL here in Houston after 34 years of Rock. It was getting stale but I believe they could have taken a new approach on the format before throwing in the towel.

Granted, it's a college station, but WRAS is celebrating 35 years on the air.

This is what happen when non-radio business people try to make radio business decisions. They don't know what they're doing, and they're just front-loading excuses for failure. Killing Peach and 96Rock, two of the biggest media brand names in terms of recognition, in favor for unknown, generic, copycat branding... wow. This is no way to run a circus.

Thank goodness there is still WPLO, 79Q (or, "Quixie in Dixie" if you prefer), Z93, et. al. hanging in.

Oh, wait...

Ummmmmmmmm.......

Yeah, I don't agree with keeping a heritage station just because its a heritage station. However, 96Rock and Peach seemed like very valuable brands which could have been revived. Though, in the case of The Bull, I'm sure they've done a format study which has identified a greater opportunity for country than AC. In the case of 96 Rock, I still think they were better off shifting the music, but keeping the name. But, what do I know?

Good ole Quixie. Thanks for the memory!

I only knew it by airchecks, not being from here. But it was one heck of a station. Z93 was also quite good in its CHR days.

My point, of course, is heritage stations go away all the time. Heritage only matters when it accompanies good product. Sometimes, it loses its lustre.

Project 9-6-1 is not a cookie cutter name for a radio station, I don't think any American station has the "Project" moniker.

Come on. It's the 99x imagery all over again... 15 years or so later.

and WREK has been on air 38 years. I guess if you want the potential for longevity non-comm is the way to go.

On Rodney Ho's blog back in November with the story about CC speaking about 96.1, Chris Williams claims to have made up the "Project 9-6-1" name.

It is a shame that Clear Channel ever got a hold of Peach 94.9 and 96 Rock. Two of Atlanta radio's greatest brands. However, it is surprising that they lasted as long as they did under CC management. Now all CC stations in Atlanta are stations that CC created themselves. Fans of The Bull, Project, El Patron, Viva, and the current WGST (if any in some of these cases)...don't get too hooked on these stations. Most everything will be changed again within 18 months.

CC stations I listened to in January 2005:
- 96rock
- 96.7 The Buzz
- Cool 105.7
- 94.9 Lite FM (just a little bit)

CC stations I will be listening to in January 2007:
- Project 9-6-1 (but not as much as 96rock)

**destroyer of heritage** only applies to long time, always successful radio stations

lite has not been that for years, neither was wkls

Don't forget that we also still have 94-Q, Y-106 and Fox 97 still to listen to. ;D

As far as Atlanta goes, I think that Clear Channel management has ruined everything.

Prove me wrong.
