Clear Channel/Greenville having automation issues?

I am starting to notice more and more frequently that Clear Channel in Greenville's automation is making some error at WMYI. They skip commercial breaks during the voicetracked time periods multiple times and in the late nights. Today I noticed about 5 or 6 times they talk for a little bit as usual before commercials, then say "so and so coming up in a few minutes" then it lights in to a jingle and those songs start playing, no commercial break. In the late night when there are usually few commercials, I notice they skip the second break of the hour(there are usually 2) and play two jingles back to back, skipping the other break. What gives? I've noticed a few times after this happens they'll stop and go to commercials like they should, but it slides by a lot. Is this happening at any of the other stations in that building?

I guess I just find it weird that this hasn't been taken care of, it's been going on for at least a month. Surely this isn't intentional.

Sounds more like they are running undersold (talk about an industry term). Voicetracking in most situations is often done before the commercial log is finalized for that day.... so you may be hearing voicetracks that have been done days in advance. The talent would have no way of knowing that the break is full or is completely empty. Moreover, most stations use Selector or another tool that schedules the jingles, liners and music. It doesn't know how many spots will ultimately run, so you would hear jingle in/out for empty spotsets unless someone did some manual editing.

gone are the days of the late night jock sippin' coffee and talking to that lonely soul. technology has led us to point out that two jingles played together and a website where we can discuss it.

Oh, heavens to Murgatroyd! Surely there couldn't be a correlation between not having compelling, viable, live souls on air and being undersold(and "undersoul-ed), could there be? You don't think...? Nah, the Great Thinktank of Broadcast Ownership/Bean Counters and its minions of upper management "yes" men have already considered that and shifted blame to..., um, I mean, determined beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's all the fault of programming, the cost of delivering that programming and/or the staff that helps deliver it....right?

Effin' pricks.

Tell it. I guess it's bad that we have to talk about skipping commercial breaks in order to have something to talk about! :-\

On a lighter note, I think 102.5's recent jingles are nice, hope they don't go premium choice soon because I like that they include more older songs than a lot of other ACs. I've heard it on WLYT and WBBQ and it is very, very boring and even more predictable. I would guess CC will make it mandatory eventually.

Back in the day, they at least had a PD who would take care of issues like this before they happened repeatedly.

I guess I don't understand how she is getting away with this. It keeps happening. They've gone over an hour and haven't ID'ed themselves before. I guess Clear Channel has more to worry about....could they not at least schedule some PSA's in that time to avoid this from happening? It's even happening in the afternoon, they go traffic-weather-song, when I believe there were supposed to be commercials inbetween. This is even happening in automated times (overnights)!

FWIW, I have listened to WESC during voicetracked periods and haven't noticed this. Also WSPA, although they use an entirely different system probably. Not sure about any of the others.

I don't know where we should talk about this situation in a generic sense, but my Dial Global standards station has been having problems. Sometimes the station IDs don't air. Sometimes ABC News doesn't air and I get to hear two extra songs, whioch can be good or bad depending on which songs. But then the station goes dead when the news is supposed to end.

I think I'd rather be water boarded than listen to 102.5. Good grief, talk about boring radio. Geeez!

I try not to listen in the afternoons while driving. It should come with a warning on the RDS: "May cause Drowsiness!" :-\

Upon looking at their site, I see the top 10 songs include Bay City Rollers/Saturday Night and Matthew Wilder/Break My Stride. Huh? And please drop American Pie. They don't go. I know they are going for "variety" but the playlist needs a bit more structure. As I stated earlier, I love 70s music and appreciate that they play it, but in reality, an AC in 2009 should be much more selective in what they play from that decade.

Speaking of clear channel greenville, does anyone know when WESC FM is voicetracked versus live? I imagine that with only have three DJs they are at some point throughout the day, and what about Long John Landrum? Thanks for your help.

Last time I heard, afternoons at WESC were live with current temps and he was reading the traffic. I would think John Landrum is VTed and Eric Rodgers overnights.

They are definately more local/live than WSSL, outside of mornings it's all tracked or syndicated I think. Afternoons are from St. Louis and overnights are Blair Garner's show.

That's what I would have guessed too: Charlie Munson and John Crenshaw were live. Its ashame Long John probably isn't...he seems like a very good radio personality.

this may not be correct but someone told me long john programs wesc so you are probably right that the nights are pre-recorded. those deejays have been on wesc for a long time. even if they are prerecorded they do a better job of sounding local. they are the best of that group

Yeah, he is the PD. I would think maybe 10am-2pm is voicetracked with Charlie live 5-10 and Crenshaw 2-7 if I were to guess. I just can't see them working live 7 hour shifts.
And I agree they are the best, CC has managed to keep this one sounding great still.
