Clear Channel Hartford Stations + KIX 97.9 in Springfield Placed in Trust

Good!!! now if they are sold that means there is a chance real radio can come back to hartford and not "less is more" there are so many Air talents over there that are limited creatively by the evil empire. This could be a good move. I wish for the best for my friends that are there

Who are these great talents we are missing. I remember Paul Pacelli's local talk show. He read from the New Haven Register and followed each paragraph with the witty "What do you think"? Can Ed Schultz or Sean Hannity top that? (and don't leap into the Hanity's a conservative jerk stuff - stick to the talent of interviewing quality and rolodex of guests). Another one is the overrated Vinnie Penn - How come fewer people listen to Vinnie than Stern or the Today Show or Imus (when he had a show)? Could it be they were edgier. I never do get an answer from all these local radio fans - who is genuinely funnier or more engrossing locally and, if they are so good, why hasn't the evil Clear Channel made them an offer? I am sure Pacelli would settle for what Limbaugh makes.

GENERALLY speaking...Why do more people eat at McDonald's than the local deli? Marketing. Why do more people listen to Rush rather than the local guy? Marketing.

Is it just marketing - Do you mean Paul Pacelli has the same level of interviewing skills, guests, and musical parodies as Rush Limbaugh? Are the callers to Jerry Kristopher as good as the callers to Stephanie Miller? (Limbaugh notes callers to his show are pre-screened - not for their political views although most who call in are conservative, but for their ability to present their position, and their ability to carry a conversation without stopping, stammering, or having thought out their positions beyond the first sentence. You can't say that about callers to WICC.) That is a great analogy abou teating at McDonalds vs. the local deli. When I go to Outback, Macaroni Grill, or McDonalds, I pretty well know I am going to get food of a certain consistency national consultants have tested and cncluded this is what most people favor. Each trip to the deli is an uncertainty - but I know it won't be as good as what the national consultants have said people want and professionals have instructed the help to provide. At the deli, the untrained people may give you something mediocre, or worse - you just never know other than it won't be spectacular. (Try ordering a hot dog at some of the indoor restaurants at lunchtime.) I am not talking about "while linen tablecloth" restaurants because those are individual anywhere, and I can't analogize something such as Party 105 with its constant nail salon commercials to the "white linen table cloth" level.

Funny...I've had more unsatisfying meals at the Outback's and such than at a local Anthony Jack's (a Southington restaurant) type eatery. I prefer a place called Ragozinno's, a deli here in Plantsville to any McDonald's. You get better quality, more nutrious food at the same price (maybe a few cents higher) than eating at McDonald's. When you go to McDonald's, many times you have to deal with teenagers who can barley add in their head (and now, more and more language barriers). When I go to the deli, I get a competant server who knows more about the meats in his store than the teenagers at McDonald's know about Paris Hilton. Everytime I try a "new" McDonald's I wonder if it will be ANY good...when I try a "new" deli, I am rarely worried about the quality. And I know that if I am unsatisfied, the deli will go above and beyond to earn my service. At McDonald's, if they mess up your order...they act like it's your fault that they put a fish burger in your bag instead of the chicken you ordered. And then you have to worry that they spit on the replacement meal.

Anyway..huge success in radio at least starts with Marketing. Rush wasn't born with all his listeners. It took many years and a ton of marketing to get stations to pick him up and to get people to listen. And as more people started listening...and as he added stations, he was developing his skills. In the mean time as they added those new stations, and added more listeners they were able to add advertisers, which in turn generates revenue to hire consultants to help polish the rough edges. Yes, it is marketing.

I have had many people tell me how tired they are of Rush, but there are few alternatives. Here in Hartford, TIC has it locked up because you can't really hear WELI, or WICC in most of the areas that TIC reaches; they aren't as listenable but TIC's signal is listeneable in those areas the smaller stations cover. So, by default people listen whether they like it or not. And in many cases, as it was with WXCT, people are such creatures of habit, they were not aware we were Talk too. So without a massive ad budget like CBS has to promote the station, we had to rely on word of mouth to "change peoples habits". And many people were finding us simply because they were scanning the dial because they were tired of "the polished hosts". You have to understand how advertising works to really understand that a friend telling a friend ONCE about "a new station" isn't enough to change the habit of a 30+ year old. However, repititiously seeing billboards, newpaper ads, cross promotion on the FM's, and TV ads can actually influence a person's behaviour. People just know, because of years of marketing, that they can turn to TIC for certain things; TIC has the position because they have been at it so long. Again, they win by default, not because the talent is necessarily better. Tell me, can Rush, Hannity et al interview without a script? Can they listen to their guest (or callers) and derive their next question spontaneously? Can there actually be a conversation instead of a series of "sound bytes" that were decided on at the prep meeting?

Also, the local hosts don't have the types of resources Rush has to make such a "great" show. Rush is tapping in to millions of callers across the country, so it is easier to pick and choose who you will put on the air. On a local level, you have less listeners to pool from, plus you want it to be the local point of view, even if it means putting on someone who has stage fright and stutters to get their point out. It's local, not over-produced. But I'm sure some local hosts could benefit from some constructive criticism.

I can agree that many people do have a low tolerance for unprofessionalism. I do not know of the hosts you are comparing to. But again, I have to go back to marketing and say that because there is so much in marketing such hosts as Rush, Beck, Miller, Ingraham, etc the companies can afford coaches and consultants to "direct" the show and give it the homogenized sound that seems to appeal to so many Americans. Think about pop music. It's the same thing. Make it generic, cookie cutter because we know it will sell. Not because it is truely better quality. But on the local level there isn't alot of money available for "talent development", and in some cases the ego is so big, that the talent isn't willing to take the criticism.

I don't knock Rush, Hannity, Beck et al's success. They have worked hard for where they are, and deserve their success. So please don't misunderstand. When you reach a certain level of success, you are expected to perform and you must do what is necessary. There was a time when Rush was more entertaining. As the audience grew the expectations changed, and in order to "deliver" he had to become more bland and less colorful in order to sell himself to as many people as possible. After all it is about money. Just because more people listen doesn't mean it's better quality. It just means, more people listen. More people are apt to slow down and "rubberneck" a grewsome accident than to slow down and "rubberneck" God's great creation. But which is better quality?

Charlie, That was a wonderful post you wrote. I enjoyed reading the whole thing. You put a lot of time into it and it is people like you who make this board worth visiting. In response, all I can say is I haven't found anyone whose show I would rather listen to than Ingraham, Limbaugh, and Miller. I don't hear their counterparts locally (WTIC has local shows too) with the production quality or topis of interest to me. I am sure they are highly scripted and tested, but that hasn't hurt my desire to hear them most. I hope someone locally (or in another city) will come up with an equally entertaining show. I haven't heard one yet, but the more the merrier.
P. S., I will have to try those delis you noted. Thanks again for a great post.

It is fun having intelligent conversation, isn't it! :)

Anthony Jacks is a steakhouse, like Outback, only better and locally owned and managed! And yes, Ragozzino's is an awesome deli. It's on Summer St. In Plantsville. FYI, they are closed Mondays, and AJ's is closed Tuesdays.

I do have to agree that the production value with national hosts tends to be better. But again it is because the networks have the resources. Locally budgets are so tight, sometimes you can be lucky to have a Hartford Courant subscription! lol

I was discussing with a friend that listeners don't like listening to someone read the paper on the air, and it's better to proof read and say whatever it is one would be reading about in one's own words. About a month or two later he remarked that he heard Hannity reading from the paper and it sounded horrible. So, even the "pros" sometimes resort to a lesser quality delivery.

I understand it can be tough to listen and enjoy the local hosts...but you might be missing something good! Plus you never know what "local" host might be next to grace the national mic, and get the coaching, consulting and bells and whistles to really rock the mic! Take a listen and then you will be able to say "I listened to him/her when they were a local host on..."

Thanks for the kind words to Jimme. I look forward to more conversations!

Sounds like an "apples / oranges" comparison to me.

From a radio professionals point of view, it is. We look at different criteria for programming options than the regular listener. It's like talking about the actual quality of the audio chain with an engineer/audiofile vs. listener. Unless there is something terribly wrong with the signal, most people will not consciously recognize the difference. And may not even care because they just want to hear their favorite musical group/talk host. But an engineer, or audiofile could debate the issue intently (as we've seen done here too). So, a listener is listening to Rush and then a local host and hears a difference and makes a like comparison because to them it is all the same, or should be the same, after all it is Talk. We've seen listeners comparing a Rock format to a Hip Hop and debating which is better, and theoretically that is apples to oranges too. On a basic level you could say comparing any talk host to another is apples to oranges because of personal preference. In any case, it does make for an interesting discussion.
