Clear Channel HD in Houston

Clear Channel has posted a list of all of its HD secondary streams as part of the company's new digital radio initiative. There are even "listen live" links for the new stations, but most of them aren't working yet.

http://www.clearchannelmusic.com/hdradio/

Looks like Houston's getting:

KHMX - New CHR
KKRW - AAA
KTBZ - Free Buzz (Indie rock/Pure Alternative, I guess?)
KLOL - La Preciosa
KODA - AC Love Songs

Some interesting choices... for the three people with HD radios.

Interesting, will those go out as far as Mix 96.5 goes and 93.7 etc? I always wondered that, wonder if I could get that out at Lavaca county if I had a HD radio?
______________

I've read that the signal for HD doesn't make it out as far as the analog signal.
The analog signal can go pretty far and weaken become staticy when you get far out, but the HD signal will just drop out.

Hey, Alex at KUHF has 10 HD Radios... stacked up in the corner of his office.

That's more than you'll find at Circuit City...
______________

I have the Kenwood EZS900HD radio in my vehicle and I receive digital in approximately the area bound by the "distant" or magenta contour on radio-locator's maps. Here's a couple of my observations: KKRW's digital signal is solid while traveling west until Winnie. In a nutshell, it covers the entire area where the analog signal sounds good. When the analog signal's sound quality starts to degrade, the digital is pretty much gone. KHPT's digital signal covers all of Houston, all of Beaumont, but drops about 5 miles east of Beaumont. KIOL's reaches approximately from Katy to the LA state line. I'm in Lafayette, LA right now (only NPR in HD here) and haven't been back to Houston since the Missouri City upgrade but will return within the next week. If anyone else can add any personal obervations, I'd like to hear about them.

Is this any kind of definite info or just speculation?

Gotta start somewhere. FM itself was once the domain of a handful of audio and technical geeks while "everyone" listened to AM. Of course that was the 1950's.

It's definite.
That link seems to be acting up though.
That list is also on All Access Net News.

All I see on the CC HD site are the Boston, NYC and San Francisco listings and audio links...are there supposed to be more stations/links, including Houston?

mmphh. CC's new way to compete with Satellite Radio since all of these HD2 channels are "commercial free, subscription free"

Yeah, but it's not only CC that's doing it.
Others are doing it as well.

Really? who are the other companies doing it so far. And are they also doing commercial free?

ABC/Disney, Emmis, and Greater Media are all doing it.
There may be others, but I'm not sure.
I don't know if they are all commercial free.

I'd like to see KRBE put a dance format on their HD2. It's something non-existent in H-town.

Just offhand, some of these (as well as some of the HD offerings in other cities) look interesting.

Among other things, this seems to fill (at least on paper) the empty niche that's existed for AAA in Houston.

That said, it isn't enough to stop my love affair with Sirius Satellite Radio. But some of these may be worth a listen. :)
