Clear Channel in Poughkeepsie

Is anyone else just totally blown away by the changes at Clear Channel in Poughkeepsie? Really, you kept Chris Marino over CJ?! He is one of THE worst jocks I've listened to. Its painful to hear all of the 'uhms' and 'uhs' between his thoughts - you can actually hear him thinking.

CJ was an amazing programmer, and an even better talent. He brought a lot to the table and had great rapport here in the HV. Dee on the other hand, well, let's just say she's replaceable.

Who is the ops manager there? Whoever it is, over the past 2 years, they have DESTROYED anything Clear Channel in Poughkeepsie had to offer.

That's sad! I listened to WRWD this morning and I heard nothing, just one guy that mentions Chris Marino from "K104", one sick puppy after another. I thought you've mentioned CJ. He was a great programmer for many years as part of a Hudson Valley radio staple. CJ came to WBPM when it was at 94.3 back in the late 80's or early 90's when he was doing Top 40 on the original "B94". I used to listened to him during afternoon drive back in my Anderson School years back in 1993. CJ was great at the time along with Carl Dayton, Downtown Lou Brown and Robert Maxwell who usually ran this station as a competitor to "K104". They were excellent. By around 1999, it flipped to a "Jammin' Oldies" format known as "Rhythm 94.3" and CJ was doing mornings as part of the "Morning Rhythm Show". I used to listened to him when he was in mornings on a rhythmic oldies station until he left in 2001. While he was at "Rhythm 94.3", he was doing afternoons on WPKF's "Kiss-FM" at 96.1 and stayed there until 2006 or 2007 when CJ returned to mornings as "CJ's Playhouse" until 2009 where he left the station to go to WRWD to do mornings with his co-host Dee. I have a couple of airchecks of him doing his show. That lasted for 3 years. I listened to his show on WRWD yesterday morning and what would turned out to be his last show. I didn't record an aircheck of him, but I never will.

One of my favorite is CJ's closing theme "Black Betty" by Ram Jam. This closing theme is way better than Dan Ingram's closing theme called "Tri-Fi Drums", but if you missed CJ in morning since he left the station, this is the complete version of the CJ's closing theme. Enjoy!

I don't recall a broadcast group making so many changes to its stations all at once, in this case just prior to the spring ratings book. Of course, the biggest change is blowing up Star 93.3 for Rock 93.3. From the brief time I listened so far, they sounded like WPDH back in the eighties. I wonder what they will do for air staff. That is what will differentiate them from WPDH, but except for Coop in the mornings, WPDH has that covered. I would not be surprised if CC relies heavily on Premier Choice, their in house syndication. The quality of these jocks is usual ok but certainly not local. Once again, I love Classic Rock, but we really don't need another station doing it. Was there not another viable home to fill?
They dismiss CJ& Dee from the morning show on country WRWD - I can't comment since I have not recently listened to WRWD. If Chris Marino moves over to that spot maybe management wants to give him another shot since he was only with WBWZ a year and a half or so and perhaps is cheap.
Then there is the strange re-flip of the WKIP and WRWD simulcasts over in Ellenville, the change in calls and possible format flip of WHUC Hudson, pending re-imagining of Crusin 93.5, and the dumping of 'The Wolf' on WPYX in Albany . Many changes in a short time. The Operations Manager sure owns the performance of Hudson Valley Clear Channel now. Although all the changes are undoubtedly from corporate, if this does not work, it will be his head.

I forgot to add in my previous post that there is speculation that WPKF ‘Kiss 96.1' could be tweaking their format too, having registered new domains indicating they are planning to lean more toward mainstream CHR.
When coming back online I came across this info: Chuck Benifers is the Market Manager at Clear Channel now. The same Chuck that used to be at Cumulus Poughkeepsie. How did we forget that?

Also... 92.1 Lite FM has changed to Lite 92.1 ... jingles are gone ... all new liners... Kiss is probably going mainstream CHR instead of the Rhy CHR.

That happens since 2001 when "Kiss-FM" went on the air and it was simulcast on both 96.1 and 99.3. It was a mainstream CHR than "Z100", by around 2004 or 2005, the station leaned to a more urban apporach playing nothing but hip-hop and R&B, just like "Hot 97" and "Power 105" combined. By around 2008, it tweaked a little bit playing some solid tunes than "Z100" and "92.3 Now" and it continued though today where the station went to a more mainstream CHR than it was first heard back in 2001.

I listened to Joe Daily this morning and you're right. They dropped the "Lite-FM" brand and rebrand itself as "Lite 92.1". The "Lite-FM" moniker can be heard on WLTW in New York City at 106.7 which is still a #1 station in NYC.

I understand changes need to be made in most situations, but this many at once and to the most valuable DJ (CJ) at Clear Channel to be fired? I'm glad they brought back Cameron Hendrix with news, but Chris Marino tanked on Kiss, he tanked on Star, so now they are going to let him tank WRWD? Have fun with that, Clear Channel!

Sort of lends itself to an old Herbert Hoover phrase I love- If you can't convince them, confuse them. It does seem like CC has gone down this road before.
