Clear Channel is about to get smaller

Clear Channel's divestiture of their smaller market stations could open up a lot of opportunities for regional broadcasting groups, or even first time buyers. Let's face it; CCU really overpaid for many, many stations during their buying spree in the late '90's. So a good number of former small-town owners are enjoying a comfortable retirement courtesy of Clear Channel. I'll bet if they wanted to, a lot of them could get back in the business for a fraction of what they received back then. Moreover, some owners in the smaller markets might be able to buy up other stations close to home. Funny how things turn around; I always thought that Clear Channel really had no business setting up clusters in Smalltown, U.S.A.

All of us should put are money together & buy a station here & make it a community run station where we play the music we all like & server the cumminty better.

CC Houston isn't for sale. So... good luck with that.

How many of these 448 stations are going to get HD radio transmitters now? This might be the best thing that ever happened to these 448 stations! Ya Dig?

Doubtful. I'm going to presume that Cumulus will be buying alot of the smaller market stations... and they haven't been on ship with the HD. (we still have no HD2's from them)

10 years later, consolidation is FINALLY hitting a wall.

maybe something good will come out of this. Cheap Channel has screwed over too many people.

Somebody at one time had a website up "Clear Channel Sucks"..Anybody know if it still around?

I believe it is.

Whoever buys CC-Houston the first thing on their agenda should be to dump The Sports Animal.
Oh, and I can't forget my fellow rock listeners. Put rock back where it belongs. Let's finally put this horrible experiment at 103.7 to rest.

I'm confused. I read in one place that Clear Channel is undervalued but in another that they overpaid for a great number of stations.
I'm inclined to believe (perhaps partially because I hate them for all they represent) that they are grossly overvalued.

If they are making money hand over fist, are they just growing tired of counting all that money?
Is it the political wind shifting from the favor of monopolization?

Cumulus can't buy all of those stations as they're already at max in several of those markets (Abilene, Wichita Falls, Midland/Odessa, and Amarillo just in Texas). However, I expect that they'll end up with a few. I wouldn't be surprised to see Peak Broadcasting end of with several of those markets. AllAccess reports Marathon will get all of the Idaho stations except Boise and that some of the sales are already done. They also report the West Virginia stations have a buyer.

As for Cumulus and HD, I know they're running "HD Radio" on a few of their stations, though I'm not aware of any streams other than the primary.

CC-Houston is NOT for sale!

CC Houston is not for sale. OK! I agree, that is most likely the case.

Not at least, until the new ownership takes over and starts downsizing the company!

The new management will be the old managemeny, Lowry, Mark and Randall Mays. They are selling their stock int he ´public company, but taking a share in the new one. And they will run it.

It's about time CC finally let go of its death grip on the smaller markets and its many jockless stations. 1,150 stations = 1,146 underserved markets. CC has never given a poop about those smaller stations, so it'll be nice to see the company turn them loose to real people who will actually invest in airstaff and promotions departments. I bet we'll see quite a few "old radio guys" buying small stations. Dare we dream of a return to the concept of local stations serving their local markets and playing what the listeners want to hear?

My understanding and suspicion is that the agreement to dump the smaller markets was the first bargaining chip in CC's petition to get the FCC to increase the station caps in their largest markets, but I don't really keep up with the business anymore, so I'm uncertain of that. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I wouldn't be surprised to hear of a CC station trade in the future wherein Cumulus gets back some of its smaller markets in exchange for its underperforming stations in the big cities. Ahem.

I bought CCO stock but refused to touch CCU because it peaked in the late 90's and then began its steady decline/flatline. CCO shares have crawled up a couple of cents for me, but I admit smirking a bit each time I check the CCU stocks and see that I made the right decision, for what it's worth. Should I dump my CCO and take a couple of bucks so my family can have a really nice Christmas courtesy of the Mays family, or should I hang on and take a "wait and see" approach with it? (Any advice on this would be welcomed.)

Puh-lease. ::)
Have you seen that cluster's billing? I don't care what business you're in, you don't dump your cash cow.

Houston-Galveston/Re: Clear Channel is about to get smaller

I don't know... CC got rid of Rhoula.... oh wait... she is just a cow... nevermind!
