Did anyone see the editiorial in the Sunday P-S yesterday bashing Clear Channel locally for the handling of the Power format "flip".I wanted to post it but can't find it online. It was written by an SU professor and was STRONG.Maybe someone can find and post. You have to feel bad for those guys as the negative press just keeps on coming!

It's unfortunate that a lawyer and a professor of law is allowing her own personal feelings interfere with the law.

If a college professor can't be unbiased in such an issue, who can we, the public, trust?

A college professor with an OPINION? Who ever HEARD of such a thing. Puh-lease. It was on the op-ed page, and plainly labelled as "opinion". Maybe you should write a rebuttal.

Not being the number one biller in Syracuse Radio has gotta hurt. Is this the first time Galaxy is on top? They must be cutting wrists at CC. Word is that Cumulus is holding back sale commissions and CC is looking to play tricks with its sales force bonus structure (Inside Music Media source).

Should be seeing those "one day sales" where sales staff sit all day calling in favors from client friends.
Big fat corporate falling down, falling down.

Maybe SHE should challenge their license. She's a lawyer and a professor. She could do it as a class project. That's what I did when I was in a similar position. If she thinks CC is unqualified, and is not serving the public, send a challenge to the FCC, and take them to court. Maybe she could win the license, and run the frequency herself. Or better yet, maybe she could convince them to donate the frequency to her, or a community group. Take action. That's how you do it. Not writing op-ed stories. That shows a lack of commitment.

Heh, heh... kinda like posting on message boards... I'm just sayin'.

Challenges to licenses are SO successful - especially since the rules were rewritten to heavily favor of the incumbent owners in '96.

Be careful what you wish for. Maybe she & her students will cause CC to spend so much money defending themselves that it will drive them into bankruptcy.

I agree. Most people who post on message boards don't have the education or credentials she has. Yet she's using the tools any private citizen can use, and thinking it carries more weight because of who she is. It doesn't.

If she wants to stir up a little more trouble, her students should investigate how much of WPHR-FM's urban programming is directed at its new community of license, the Village of Solvay, New York.

According to the most recent census, African-Americans comprise 0.67% of Solvay's total population, with other identified minorities making up less than five percent. Note that African-Americans account for over seven percent of the total population of Auburn, the city WPHR-FM moved away from, yet this recent change was deemed to further the public interest by providing Solvay with its "first local service". At least that's what Clear Channel argued in its application:

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs...h.cgi?exhibit_id=674477&formid=301&q_num=5320

So if Clear Channel wants to honor FCC programming guidelines as defined in "The Public and Broadcasting", the urban-focused programming would need to be moved from WPHR to a station licensed to serve the City of Syracuse, such as WHEN.

It's interesting that YOU notice those things, while the FCC, the actual agencies that is charged with making such observations, didn't. It's also interesting that the program format of the station was not mentioned in the application. Or at least I didn't see it mentioned. Nor was the race of the target audience. I can assume that such information was also not requested.

I've made this point before, but Clear Channel finds itself the object of a lot of criticism by people for what they do or don't do. But the real culprits are the regulatory agencies responsible for radio. If the speed limit is 55, and there's no one around to catch you, do you still follow the law? If so, you're in the minority.
