Clear Channel layoffs?

I've heard stories from another list that there may be some big layoffs coming at Clear Channel-supposedly around 1,000 folks are supposed to be let go. Has anyone on the list heard this, or is this just idle speculation?

Wonder if the cuts will hit as hard here since CC is already trimming two stations from their Houston cluster?

Might want to keep an eye on 790. Are they committed enough to the SportsTalk format to keep it going in the face of three competitors?

I would think Houston would get cut more, since they can no longer spread costs over as many stations. KBME, as the fourth sports station in the market, is an obvious candidate for a format change. It is fully staffed for sports, and gets poor ratings.

So then what would happen? I wonder if Charlie would get an evening sports show on 740 or maybe, just maybe, get re-united with Rich?

"The bulk of CLEAR CHANNEL's job cuts will be in sales, dropping those who aren't top performers. 'The focus is on rewarding the very best salespeople, and letting them maximize their own compensation,' in part by picking up accounts from their less-stellar peers, this person said.

Do you guys think this is really the smartest strategy? It seems to me that salespeople are the ones who gets things moving. Their must be a lot of "dead-weight" salespeople in their organization.

It depends on how you define the "very best salespeople". My guess is that they will view the "very best" as those they trust will end up with a bigger list, lower pay and no bitching. There won't be anyone getting rich with a large list over there. They'll just be paid much lower commissions with added pressure and responsibility. The actual "very best" salespeople IMHO, will most likely be gone because CC will not trust their ability not to complain about the changes. And futhermore: lots more turnover.

Man, I feel really bad for all those people losing their jobs at KGOW. Wait, what? The Game isn't part of the CPOD and isn't laying people off?! They're HIRING people?! AMAZING! I thought all you experts were certain that 1560 would be dead by September 07, Granato was leaving for CBS, and they would be announcing their closure in January 2009.

I love this site, it's like a negative barometer of CLEARLY SUPER GENIUS regarding Houston radio.

Anybody hearing anything yet about the first wave of cuts today? East coast?

Cuts in the KTRH newsroom -- reporter/producer/afternoon web editor Becky Chosed, producer Maggie Flecknoe...AM Production Director John Swift...790 the Sports Animal PD - Tim Collins, who had been with the company 20 years, and many more in sales and promotions ALL let go Tuesday. Just another blood bath!

too bad. good luck to all. tim, hope to see you at the drive-in movies. ;)

Cutting the work force is never easy. Does anyone know if Easy Money made the cut? I know he went on and on about how great CC was but no one likes to see someone else in the industry lose their job. Just asking.

I realize this might not be the right board, but anyone know if there were any casualties at the Beaumont, TX CC cluster? It is awfully quiet down there.

Unable to determine - as of yet the on-air personnel are the same. Al Caldwell is still there, unfortunately.

Have not heard any yet but I would not be suprised if they did like XTRA 1360 and dump every-one and turn it on to satellite / VT / provide content from houston CC.

Well, there are a few people who enjoy that sort of thing. For instance, I thought surely Fo-fo-fo-hye! would be on board bright and early, gloating about all the job losses. No word from either him or Easy Money. Eerily quiet from those two today!

To the board: I thought about this about five seconds after the coffee hit my brain, but unfortunately, I was already in Houston traffic by that time. I apologize for my previous remark. It was unkind in spirit and uncalled-for in the face of the real pain this business is experiencing. I regret that very much.

Aunti:

I don't think there was any offense taken by anyone. Fo-fo was an antagonist on this board to anyone who crossed him (or her?). I'll never forget how he defended the hiring of that "See Ya" guy as a brilliant move in Houston radio.

Easy Money was foolish in his defense of employers he didn't seem to understand (I can cite the posts).

Where is The Clear Answer? Maybe he survived the Miami cuts (Ken Charles, where are you?).

I'm really happy to know the people I've been privileged to work with at 740 are still employed, even though Ken got demoted to Miami. Aaron Kitursky (ABC Radio), Lana and JP, the totally cool KTRH programmer Mr. Erickson (he came in just after I quit) and Robert Arnold (KPRC-TV), among many others.

Then again, well, there might be one person who was caught up in the latest "bloodletting" who may have truly deserved it.

I undertand, Aunti.

Oh, and I forgot the nuzchick, one of my favorite people from "This -- is the news station, AM 740 KTRH -- give us 30 minutes, we'll give you the world."

I wish I could do what she's doing these days.

And BTW, my best to you Bonnie Petrie! You probably missed it, but we used to talk about you fondly on the air at FM Newschannel...

Stan: What's your problem with Caldwell?
