Clear Channel may cancel talk station shuffling, keep Green 960 intact

Not surprised. KKGN would make a coup if they acquire ALL of the former KGO hosts but I doubt it.

The "proposed" schedule as of today, according to R-I's Tom Taylor: Starting Jan. 3rd --

910 - KKSF

Armstrong & Getty - 6-9 a.m.
NO ONE NAMED YET - 9-Noon
Tom Sullivan (Syndicated) - Noon - 3
Len Tillem (the Loy-ah) - 3-4
Gene Burns - 4-7

No one named for nights yet. "Dining Around w/Gene Burns 10-2" (Starting Sat. Jan 6)

960 - KNEW

Glenn Beck - 6-9 a.m.
Dave Ramsey - 9-Noon
Randi Rhodes - Noon-3
Norman Goldman - 3-6
Market Wrap - 6-7
Stephanie Miller - 7-10
Thom Hartmann - 10-1
OVERNITES NOT NAMED YET

Clear Channel is playing it close to the vest as to where to place (other than on an HD-2 frequency): Alan Colmes, John & Jeff, Phil Hendrie & Joe Ansari.

May Ray T all nite? He did work at the old KNEW when he started out. Comes down to expense. Same if they put Rothman on 910 from 7-10 or 10-1.

Interesting shell game. Of course ... syndication is cheaper to Clear Channel as it is to Cumulus overnight at KGO.

Add my voice to the chorus who will follow the former KGO hosts over to 910 AM. Specifically, John Rothman, who has a wonderful foreign policy approach to his topics and should be syndicated across the country IMHO. CC has said that the new version of Newstalk 910 will be available on iHeart.com. Hopefully, podcasts of the shows will be made available too, similar to how they were featured on the KGO app (powered by AirKast).

P.S. It is not Joe Ansari, it is Moe Ansari, and either way you spell it, his is a pay for play show, which any self respecting talk station should avoid. His Marketwatch show was aired in PM Drive on KABC Los Angeles, weekdays at 6p for over a year, until about a year ago. Such a shameful programming move!

Maybe it's just me, but it seems odd that they're mixing up right & left on each station rather than having each station be all of one or the other. Does a Randi Rhodes listener want to hear promos for Glenn Beck (or vice versa)?

It's always best to remember who the customer is. The customer is the advertiser, not the listener. Then look at what they did to cable networks. Used to be you could find history on the History Channel, science on Discovery, music videos on MTV, etc. Now, you're as apt to find a science program on History as a reality show on Lifetime. The reason is that the TV people now aim the cable networks not at content but at who they'll draw. History is not aimed at history buffs, but at middle-aged men. Comedy Central is not aimed at people who like comedy as much as it's aimed at younger men. And so on.

Now look at radio. Is it better to aim a station at lefties or at rightwingers or to aim at males 25-49 or females 35 to 54, etc? It's probably going to be much easier to corral all the talkshow hosts that appeal to women of a certain demo and put them on one station and those who appeal to men on another, etc.

Wither Gil Gross?

Perhaps he has better career options than CC's rebuilt 910...perhaps he will return to ABC News Radio. He only came to do local talk in SF BECAUSE it was KGO.

OK how come CC didn't consider putting the 910 or 960 talk radio hosts on either 101.3 or 103.7 FM
If Don Bleu was leaving Star 101.3 how come they didn't consider talk on FM like what CC did for KFBK 1530AM/ 92.5 FM. I know in some parts of the country Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh are on FM

For the same reason that has been discussed before in regard to Cumulus. 101.3, and presumably 103.7 make money so it makes no sense to blow them up and move low rated talk hosts there.

I'm also skeptical that syndicated right-wingers would ever get good ratings in the liberal Bay Area. I know - Savage did - but he was local before he was syndicated, and had built a following.

This morning (Wednesday, 12/21) Stephanie Miller devoted 15 minutes to the entire lineup changes at AM 960. Some of her listeners in SF may have been hearing about it for the first time. Her show is a REAL morning-drive show, much more so that the often lugubrious Glenn Beck. Sometimes he takes such long pauses between sentences that he has to cut a royalty check to the John Cage Estate. If Beck has to be on AM 960 at all, HIS show should be the one on tape delay.

As far as syndicated talk lineups went, KKGN had the BEST.

Now they're going to trash that by adding GLENN BECK? WTF?

I was the one who brought this issue up with Cumulus in terms of KGO on 104.5FM or putting KSFO and KNBR on FM.

Yes, I know. And in either case (Cumulus or CC) it makes no sense to kill a profitable FM format. Maybe in a couple of years when AM is on life support and/or one of the FMs is tanking in the ratings, but not now.

Again- the KCBS situation was different given the 2 failed formats on 106.9. Neither Cumulus or CC has an FM loser right now.

I get the feeling Beck won't last long there. And it looks like 960 is keeping quite a bit of the KKGN format in place. Thom Hartmann, Mike Malloy and Bill Press will now air overnights.

Within a few months, Beck will likely be gone from there, as even Clear Channel has not been afraid to yank him from some of their stations. Eventually, the station will probably go full-circle and air most of the Green 960 lineup. The shuffling is far from done.

Speculation Alert: Announcement due on Jan. 2nd that Rush Limbaugh will move from KSFO to KKSF-910 to go against Ronn Owens on KGO? e

Stranger things have happend. Clear Channel has done this is several big markets (Boston, for example) and wasn't this tried once before?

Rush in the morning ... Burns in the late afternoon, Tillem at three. Sullivan at noon.

Tweet from Armstrong & Getty says it's true. No word from Clear Channel or KSFO ... yet. Stay tuned.

Interesting.

Now, what happens 7-10 pm, 10-1 and overnites?

Hmmmmmmmmm.
