Clear Channel not even trying

When I was in the mountains, I actually heard WMXF and it was a shame.

A few years ago they were still doing Dial Global standards, even though the station doesn't have that good a signal in Asheville and no signal at night. It was certainly the only station going after the retired population that wasn't Christian, classical or talk. More importantly, it was the "hometown station" for Waynesville, which no longer has a radio station. Canton has a real country station with a lousy signal and some religious programming but only local sports at night if there is any.

Then they decided they needed to simulcast Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, etc. even though WWNC has a powerful signal. The only thing WMXF does on its own is a Sunday morning bluegrass show and some sports, including the local high school.

Last week the humming noise was louder than the programming. This is a station which has a very good signal where it can be picked up, but it sounds like some equipment is running in the background. That's no way to do things.

I was there last year and while visiting Waynesville tried to listen to WMXF but the relay of the talk shows didn't peak my interest. No pun intended since they used to go by "The Peak". Nothing was local when I tuned in. The way CC dumped all there small market stations a few years ago you would have thought someone would have pick this one up cheap. I talked with someone that knows the area fairly well and he said at one time it could have made a decent station but it is a hard sell over there and with the station having no heritage now it would be even harder.

WPTL did have a good hick-sounding commercial for a feed store or something. At least something like that is promising. If I tune in at the right time of day at least I've got that.

Speaking of WPTL I saw a listing for a 500w AM station in NC that the owners wanted to retire and that station came to mind. I know the 500 watter in Bryson City recently got purchased and WPTL is the only other one I could recall. Does anyone know if it's for sale?

I wonder if WPTL is actually on the air 24 hours? I did an FCC query and they can do 38 watts night - not too terribly bad considering the frequency. It's much better than Canton's other AMer 970 WYSE (heritage WWIT) that only flickers 3 watts at night.

I've never heard them at night. I think they just do that for sports.

As for WYSE, at least in my motel room, I've gotten almost as good a signal at night as during the mday. I think they must be using higher power than authorized.
