Clear Channel Oklahoma Cuts?

Any idea if Oklahoma's Clear Channel stations will be among those cut this week? Talent? Programming? Tulsa or OKC hit harder? Anyone have an idea?

I see a lot of people cut loose from around the country but nothing from Oklahoma. Maybe they were spared. Anyone have news to the contrary????

There HAVE been cuts, but mainly in sales. I'm sure others will enlighten us on the details soon. Too bad this message board melted down earlier today or we'd probably already know... ::)

Not 100 percent spared, but it does seem we have been spared the brunt of things. Part of the good news for OK is that stations here aren't hurting AS much. Also, both Tulsa and OKC have been rather lean anyway. There isn't a whole lot of extra bodies to cut even if they wanted to without cutting into the profit and they know it.

No obvious on-air changes here in Tulsa. KMOD (97.5) and KTBT (92.1) were broadcasting live and local this morning. KTBZ's Afternoon Drive show with Plank, Poplin, and King was in its usual timeslot yesterday.
At least the on-air product is not being tinkered with, which is good.

Too bad they didn't 'tinker' with the fool that is allegedly the P.D. of that one. Loosing him would be like loosing a wart were one sits.

They need to tinker with 1430's on-air product. It's horrible. 95% of their programming is off the bird, and the 5% that encompasses the afternoon show is hardly listenable. It certainly isn't engaging.

I like Chris Plank, but how he managed to get a weekend gig on Fox Sports Radio is beyond me.

I think Plank does a great job considering what he has to work with. The man is constantly at that radio station it seems like 24/7. Plus he's been doing the graveyard weekends on Fox Sports Radio weekends! Wow, that doesn't leave a lot of free time for a family man.

I think Plank's weekend shift may've helped save 1430's local programming. However, I've read Fox Sports Radio has gutted several programs including the weekday overnight program. How that impacts Plank's weekend show I'm not sure.

I'm just glad CC spared Tulsa from any programming cuts. I know San Diego and Detroit's CC sports stations were hit hard.

I can't stand the sports animal's OKC afternoon programming. Jim Traber, Al Eshbach, and co. are unlistenable.

Yes Plank & Co. are so much better than the Sports Animal both Tulsa and OKC's shows.

The OKC sports animal is nothing but OU homers.

What happened to Geoff Haxton? he was a good host. That Ward guy is not as good, I guess he is the boss though.

I disagree. They are annoying, but also engaging. Like them or hate them, they give you a reason to listen, which is something 1430 hasn't been able to do for years. I recognize a lot of Tulsans will likely refuse to listen to them because they're "OKC", but it's better radio than 1430's local show. Plank, as much as I like him, brings nothing to the show. It's basically a call-in show and nothing more. Eschbach is a radio legend in OKC, and Traber isn't far behind. For the record, I can't really stomach them either.

I know that sports radio has never been much of a ratings winner in Tulsa, but I'm a little surprised that CC has yet to counter The Sports Animal with anything at all, and with the cuts, I suppose it's unlikely that they will anytime soon.

I'm not sure what happened to Geoff. I believe he is still doing ORU baskeball play-by-play. Maybe he just didn't have time for a M-F talk show.

They kind of blew up the old morning show and kind of recrafted it, but it's basically the same. Kevin Ward is a good guy, but maybe not morning show material.

Kevin Ward puts me to sleep. OU this and OU that. Not everyone eats, lives, and breathes Sooner Football. That's what makes the Buzz and Plank refreshing. Plank gives you the latest on TU, w/plenty of OU, OSU, and even ORU. He's also not afraid to talk about the NFL or MLB.
The Sports Animal tries so hard to be THE OU station its actually kind of sad. Plus, the FM signal is toss-up of whether or not it will come in clear.
Big Al does a good job with what he's been given to work with. I admire his passion.
However, I feel like the Sports Animal's always doing a remote somewhere, and it's just kind of old.
Why on earth is the Sports Animal carrying KU Basketball in addition to ORU Basketball and Baseball, Royals baseball, Thunder B-Ball, and regular season NFL games on Sports USA?
Are there that many Jayhawks fans around here? I think the only reason they are carrying the team is to have the rights to one OU game per year in basketball and one a year in football, unless of course KU is out of OU's rotation for 2 years cause of the whole BigXII North/South scheduling thing.

This has turned into the OU homer thread!

I haven't caught Kevin's show much. I heard it a little this morning, and they were discussing OSU's new football schedule in depth. After that, they were talking about ORU basketball. For the 15-20 minutes I listened, I didn't hear OU mentioned, other than talking about next year's Bedlam game.

I agree, Eschbach and Traber spend way too much time talking about OU, but the other Animal shows mix it up a lot, from what I've heard.

I haven't had a problem picking up the FM signal since they boosted the power, and I have to travel from Sand Springs to Oologah twice a day. I can even get it clearly in my building, which I can't do with 1430.

I agree that the Animal has their plate full with team programming. If I have to drive at night, I like to listen to Thunder games. But if there's an ORU game on 97.1, they will often move the Thunder game to a sister station, which is usually 100.3 (very hard to pick up north of Tulsa) and the games have even been on KITO in Vinita a couple of times!

I have alot of takes on the sports radio/media so here are a few.

I do agree about Plank and Poplin trying to talk about national things instead of nothing but OU football 24/7, thats why I like their show more than 97.1. I got where I absolutely despise OU because of the homerism on the OKC animal. Just look at their roster most of them are OU grads or get a check from the mighty OU. I can't listen when 97.1 has that James Hale guy on to end their morning show with his spin.

When Traber, Eschbach and Blevins are on, Wow I don't know if you can get worse. I like Traber's opinions on baseball and when Berry Tramel argues with him, Eschbach and Blevins are useless or clueless.

I miss the old "Sports Cage"

The old "Sports Cage" was a damn good show.

Maybe it's the radio in my car, but I have a hell of a time picking up 97.1, unless I'm in Broken Arrow and points east. The signal is perfect in Muskogee, Sallisaw, even east of Ft. Smith on I-40.

I'm glad the Animal broadcasts Royals games. I'm also glad they are our Thunder affiliate. I just think the sports/talk genre can get rather stale at times, especially in a minor league market like Tulsa.

Speaking of Ft. Smith, they have a pretty good sports station out that way on 103.1 called The Sports Hog. If you think the OU homerism is bad on The Sports Animal, you should check out the Arkansas homerism there.
