Clear Channel partnering with Bright Night this year

Kind of surprising that after a few years of Citadel being the radio sponsors of Bright Night in Providence, this year it's Coast. Of course, if you go back to the days of First Night there was peaceful coexistence with multiple stations involved regardless of ownership, but I guess those days are gone. Maybe I'm over thinking this but I can't help but wonder if Citadel has fallen out of favor with the current mayor by hiring the ex mayor resulting in a strained relationship with the city. Naaaah.

I never liked the name 'BRIGHT NIGHT". It sounds like a Toy from Hasbro. I was perfectly happy with the name "FIRST NIGHT". Sometimes it's just better to leave things alone. This would be one of those times.

First night is a trademarked property.

Lots of places use First Night though & Providence never had problems with it before. I seem to remember they downsized the event a few years back & that's when the name of the event changed. There were times when Lite Rock 105 was handing out coffee, WCTK had a dancing exposition in the Convention Center, & the HJY tent was up at Kennedy Plaza. That was back when Lupo's was Lupo's & The Strand was The Strand.

.

I don't think the name change had anything to do with a Trademark. I think it was Mayor Cicciline's attempt at being creative.

Yes it did have to do with the trademark. The First Night organization had problems getting funding, couldn't pay for the trademark fee and weren't going to hold the event around 5-6 years ago (actually I think Buddy was still in office). It was in the news....if I remember correctly, the Chamber of Commerce rallied some funding to put on a lower cost event, also didn't want to pay the licensing fee for First Night and made it Bright Night

That's interesting. Thanks for the info. I still hate the name though. BTW... who is the moron that made up the name DOWNCITY? I hate that even more than I hate the name "Bright Night".

To be honest, until the 70's practically everyone who lived in Providence called it "Downcity". "Where you going?" "Downcity" NEVER, however "Downcity Providence". I hate that.
My parents and grandparents always said either Downcity or Downtown Providence....

Well I've always said either "Downtown" OR "The City". But NEVER Downcity? It sounds like somebody who was bored one day just started combining words. I think I read somewhere that Providence is the only city that uses that term. So obviously it was created by some dummy who lives here.

I even hate the way it sounds. I hate it so much that whenever I hear someone in the media say it, I instantly change the station. I had to do this yesterday while I was watching snow coverage on Television. I don't even want to listen to anyone who says Downcity. The word honestly sounds retarded. I wish people would stop using it.

When you're alone & life is making you lonely you can always go .........
Yeah you're right. It doesn't have the same ring.
By the way, I understand the good mayor will be officially proclaiming December 13th of each year Fright Night
