Clear Channel Pensacola

So, does any of the Pensacola Clear Channel Stations (TK 101, 107.3) have HD radio equipped? If not, when will they? How long does it to take for a station to get HD radio?? I wonder If it's the Hurricane excuse, that's pretty sad....we have not had a hurricane for the past 3 years.

and I doubt if the FWB stations are ever going HD, either.

this area is behind the times.

rob....it doesn't have a DAMN thing to do with being "behind the time"....it is a thing called money...it cost about $200,000 PER station to do an HD conversion right.....if you have about 500 HD receivers in FWB....and that is REALLY stretching it...(it is probably more like 25), that is spending about $4,000 per listener.....when receivers are common place you will see smaller markets going HD

rob, you live in a fantasy world.....

Amen to that one brother.

The smaller markets, like mine, don't have the luxury of having a big named electronics store, nor do we have any HD radio stations.

I heard one local station speaking of HD radio but right now that station has no plans of building such a station, since they said it isn't worth the expense to get one going.

Now if WALX thought they could profit from HD Radio, they would've already built Selma Alabama's first and only HD station.  Since they don't see a profit coming from HD radio, at this moment, why would they waste their money and build such a station?  Something to think about.

I may not be in Radio now but I've been learning so much, over the years and know that if ain't broke then don't fix it!  If WALX has gotten by without a HD station, for these many years, why rock the boat and build something that may be a complete failure for them?

To make a long story short, HD Radio may never catch on here in Selma Alabama. Even if it does, I don't see anyone building a HD station, in the forseeable future.

Even if I had a HD Radio, it wouldn't serve me a purpose, unless I moved to Birmingham Alabama.  I'm not about to spend money on gas, just so I can move to Birmingham and check out the many HD Stations they already have. That would be a waste of time and resources, that I could better use, as I carry on with my writing Ministry and make an attempt to return to radio broadcasting.

P.S. In most small markets, they're usually the last to catch on to the latest fads.  Mine is no exception.  To cceng, hope I stated my case correctly. I may still be learning the do's and don'ts of radio but I'm very familiar with a smaller market, since I've lived in one my entire life.

HD radio's will not be common place until there under $50 bucks.
sorry, but im not living in a "fantasy world"
this area is behind the times because we are not as big.

You may can go to your electronics store and get a HD radio, whenever you want.  I don't have that luxury, since all we have is Wal-Mart and a franchise of Radio-Shack.

When one lives in a community that bases its ecomomy on Food Stamps, Welfare Checks and/or People standing on the corners begging for a handout, has a population of less than 30,000 and high crime rate, that makes things very tough.

I live in such a place and don't see HD Radio making any inroads in the forseeable future.

However I do see Ft. Walton Beach getting some HD stations, at some point, in the future.  If you're blessed to get some HD stations, then enjoy them.  I may be gone from this world, before Selma gets any and I'm now celebrating my 37th Birthday.

P.S. Hope I'm still stating my case correctly, cceng.  If not, you can help me state it right.

I can only imagine what they are. Looks like *** has a big chunk out of this.

As I said before, I'm not buying one until there $50 bucks or less. Since there made with chinese slave labour, there making over 300 - 500 percent profit and in today's shitty economy, that's not an option for a lot of people who are struggling to pay gas.

Hey Robby, weren't you just touting the benefits of one of them thar new fangled fancy dancy radios that did it all? You even sent the link to the site. Did that radio have HD capability? How's your clock radio holding up, still got the dipole antenna wire lying under your bed?

Y'all need to read some of the columns that come attached to this here board--free of charge--every once in awhile. Back in February, Jim Carnegie & Jerry DelColliano wrote a two-parter on "Saving Radio" (You can get the article by Googling that title and/or the authors' names).

One of their 11 points for saving the industry was to "Unplug your HD equipment. Make a doorstop out of it." Their explanation is, basically, that HD Radio is a technology that is too little, too late. Or, to put a point on it, that young listeners are already abandoning FM, so attaching something to a band they'll never hear makes no sense.

Anybody remember Quadrophonic FM back in the late seventies or early eighties? I'm sure Charlie does--and Tibbs. One of the Tampa-St. Pete rockers promoted themselves for a year or so as having Quad--to mass yawns. Actually it probably sounded pretty cool if you were high enough...

Great observations! I enjoyed reading them.

Even if my hometown was to get a HD station, I still wouldn't fork out the dough just to check it out.

Far as I'm concerned, there are bigger issues to tackle than to worry about if a certain community is going to get a HD station or not.

In my case, we're now trying to survive. We're now going through a gang fad, which loves to have fights with each other, outside our local high school. (Bloods and Crips)

I'm very concerned about my hometown's future and hope that we're not heading towards a lawless city.

For me, HD Radio isn't important. Just trying to survive and carrying on with my Missionary work is far more important. If I can help get Selma Alabama back on fire for God and help rid it of the various evils that are occuring, that would be awesome and wonderful. I'm Praying that God will continue to use me, in this important area.

Yes it was cool. I'd set up my speakers at the suggested distances from each other, the floor and walls every Sunday night and listen do the album the local rocker tracked in it's entirety. They hooked me with Dark Side.

Quad. Just fell into a dream.........

nope, only stereo. (sorry, no clock radio's that do that i used this for scanning anyway)

also should mention when 107.3 goes to 50,000 W they will lose an audience in FWB. (last checked they were #7 there)

their signal hasn't been the strongest here lately. it makes me wonder if they are now at 50KW.

What are you talking about? There's no way WOWW 107 is giving up their C1 status and downgrading to a class C2! Who would that benefit? There's no station in a nearby market that could afford to pay Clear Channel to downgrade 107.3.

I've never understood why Clear Channel kept 107.3 on that lone tower in central Escambia county, they should move it over to Wilcox road with the rest of the Mobile/Pensacola FMs

Even if 107.3 downgraded, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference. FWB stations are all on adjacent towers with the antennas at about the same height. 96.5 and 98.1 are both 100kw C1s, they have close to the same coverage as 50kw C2s 93.3 and 99.5. In fact, I swear 99.5 has better coverage than 98.1, even during light tropo. I bet the 99.5/98.1 coverage issue could be explained by the type of antenna they are broadcasting from?
All of the FWB 50kw stations have better signals than 100kw WAAZ 104.7.

as usual, Rob uses some LPFM site to check his info....not the FCC web site....Rob it is www.fcc.gov

they are moving from Molino (north of Pensacola) to the "antenna farm" near Wilcox Rd in Baldwin County AL.....they are INCREASING their ant HAAT from 429 to 488 meters....no Rob, I am not going to convert that to feet for you....do the math yourself....1 meter = 3.28 ft...get your abacus (sp?) out and figure it out yourself......they have to reduce power to 50 kw to move west (there is another station near their freq somewhere west....I think it is in Biloxi/Gulfport if I remember right)....the new location gives them a better signal in Mobile (much bigger than Navarre or Ft Walton)....they aren't giving up much coverage to the east....mostly pine trees in the Eglin AFB reservation. Lord knows, there are PLENTY of FWB stations you can listen to....in fact I doubt you will notice a difference in the signal once they move to the new site.

Tibbs...what we need to do is put a 500kw FM station in Rob's back yard with a 1700 ft tower (518 meters Rob)....screw the FCC and the Air Force...we will tell them Rob forced us to build it.....we can let Rob program it and put George Noory (sp?) on it 24/7.

so, if you're following along at home....

Rob said Radio-Locator is MUCH MORE credible then the FCC website! HOW RIGHT HE IS! Who needs to file with the FCC when you have Radio-Locator! WOW!

Seriously Rob, CCENG is a Broadcast Engineer, so i think he has some idea about what he's talking about!
