Clear Channel picks up a translator in "The Parish"

From Taylor on Radio-Info:

In New Orleans, Clear Channel picks up an FM translator at 96.5 licensed to Meraux, Louisiana. It’s known as K243AT and its current permittee is Keenan Heard of Extreme Media Group LLC. Brokerage credits on this $75,000 deal go to CMS Station Brokerage (per the asset purchase agreement) and I’ll remind you what I said back on April 17 – Keenan Heard is the nephew of former Radio One programmer and On Top group head Steve Hegwood. Heard is involved in two highly-interesting FM translator deals in Atlanta, one of them involving Cumulus. Radio One filed suit in April against Hegwood, Keenan Heard and Cumulus.

With more broadcasters using translators as relays of HD2 stations and Am Stations due to rulings by the FCC as of late, And the fact that the 504 definitely has no real use for translators (especially ones that close to the 9th ward hint hint)... My guess is a try of high rated (CCs highest rated AM in the 504) WYLD-AM on FM to counter 94.9s weak signal in the 504? Especially since according to the FCC paperwork, Clear Channel has to "build out" the station...

What's everyone's guess (unless they decide to flip 1280Am to another format)?

Ohhh! I see. I thought they were going to use that stick to "translate" their content into "Chalmetion," "Delachrotchian" and "Merauxvian,"
My bad.
I completly mis-understood the post!
;D

Considering Castner and Osterlind can't pronounce "Chalmette", "Delacroix" or "Meraux", they need a linguistic translator on 99.5 before they can think of superserving "Da Parish".

Thankfully, Gerry V is on this week for Osterlind. Sadly, Osterlind comes back Monday.

Even sadder, Castner is still here.

Seriously though, since RFLA asked, I would guess WODT. Is their signal weak in St. Bernard?

No a lot of people don't tune around on AM no more, considering how FM quality is (just look at all the talkers coming to FM). A recent ruling by the FCC allows companies such as clear channel to rebroadcast their Am stations off of FM translators built before May 2009. Since this one was granted in 2006, it qualifies. (Before this ruling, they were a few Amers retransmitted on FM due to interference and was granted on a case by case basis such as WJNT 1180 from Jackson,Ms. due to interference from Cuba)

I think they (CC) didn't really want to kill the gospel on 104.1 considering the success in Jackson and Alabama, but a out of area signal compared to 94.9 at the time (that and 94.9 had been around for a few years) meant no ratings. With ratings on WYLD-AM as high as 94.9, I think CC would use the translator as an extra boost to get 940 WYLD into the traditional Black areas of New Orleans.

And to the other two posters, I agree on Clear Channel having to give some of it's local talent they import some Yat skills before getting on the air.... :D
