CLEAR CHANNEL PROVIDENCE LUCKED OUT?

Well if the named published in the trades are accurate it doesn't look like the Providence cluster was affected by Tuesday's Clear Channel layoffs. Unless some off-air or sales staff got it, which naturally is important to those affected, but this wouldn't exactly be message board fodder. Times have changed though. It used to be that news of layoffs and firings got people in other stations and markets excited to think there might be jobs there. Now it means there are just fewer jobs period.

You are so wrong about that. Some big name people got the axe yesterday. Did you notice any key people missing from the P&A show this morning? Traffic & Sports is missing.. That place is a mess. Also, Helen Glover's producer got the axe as well. They now join the 9.3 of RI unemployment.

Eliminating players from the morning show is a bad idea. I wonder if Steve saw it coming since they took him off the B101 morning show a while back. I'm surprised about Newbury only because I thought he sold time on his own show but who knows?

I do have to say one thing though and it doesn't mean I'm in favor of these changes. For years Providence radio stations have held audiences captive because in spite of changes or bad programming moves the listeners didn't go anywhere else because other than ac choices there really was no alternative other than Boston. If you didn't like what was happening on HJY or B101 or even PRO-FM you dealt with it because there was no similar format. Now the ones making the decisions are banking on that same listener mentality and it will have no effect on listenership. Some listeners will scream but the screaming will die down and the numbers won't change. What's worked in the market's favor in the past will keep working but now more radio people are paying for it. Am I off base in thinking this way? None of it is the fault of those on the talent end of it by the way.

No wonder Laudani is leaving. Maybe he'll eventually take people with him.

F-ing horrible. Those rotten Bastards at C.C.. How much f -ing money are they saving? So they can BLOW it on the next dumb move they make.

Letting Shorts & Skidmarks go is like taking Seinfeld at the height of its popularity & deciding to cut Kramer & Costanza. It's idiotic. Morning shows, if not entire radio stations, should be staffed like you're casting a sitcom. Every character plays his part. Lose someone & the show goes on but it isn't the same. Then John Hogan makes mind-numbing dumb comments referring to a "flight to quality" for sponsors & Clear Channel providing that quality. There's even some reference to a Clear Channel mobile app called I (heart) Radio. No they don't (heart) radio. Regardless of what the business decisions are, don't make stupifiengly dumb comments no one is going to believe but everybody pretends to publicly.

There has to be some sort of balance that I doubt will ever come at this point. The business end of it has to be taken into consideration, but those running the show also have to have an ear for entertainment. Go too far on the entertainment end of the spectrum & you have a station that gets rave reviews but no listeners. Go too far with the business decisions & you have the suicidal direction we're going in now.

If the suits would just shut the hell up after making these decisions it wouldn't be so laughable.

Hi , I worked with John Ham and all the rest. I left there awhile ago. Like them. This news made me cry.
I feel so bad for you all. Good friends and co workers. :(

Bruce will land on his feet somewhere quick.
I am actually amazed he was let go because I have a feeling other than the paid advertising shows (enter the legal mumbo jumbo here about "the views expressed by"....), he may have been bringing in the only real $$ that HJJ was seeing on the weekend other than the URI games (which will still have Steve MacDonald broadcasting....)

Steve Mac is a great sportscaster/ host. Always wondered why he never landed at WEEI or WSKO if given the chance. Heard he passed up an offer from Imus.

Johnny Skidmarks made an off color remark last week after announcing the Islamic School of Rhode Island was cancelled. It sounded like Paul changed the subject real quickly after that. I wonder if anyone caught that?

Who is doing news & sports this week on P & A? They base 59% of their show on interrupting the segment alone.

If you listen to WHJJ in the morning, you'll get your "local" news from Syracuse. The station there has been voicetracking the midday news for 2 years now and will now be doing AM drive too.

The numbers won't change in terms of audience share, but overall listenership will continue to decline as more people discover alternative sources of music and entertainment.

Any word on how the Clear Channel/Providence sales department fared with the layoffs? What about other behind the scene people?

From what I heard, 7 out of 16: gone.

Yikes. Well by now, the entire 3rd floor should be just about empty. Anyone who is left could find space on the 4th floor. Clear Channel could save some rent money once their lease with the Roland Company is up. I'm sure it's already been considered.

Doesn't CC still own the property on Eastern Ave? They could always renovate 115/125 & move back to East Providence. Instead of paying rent on Oxford Street.

There's a rumor on the LA board about nationalization of all CC top 50 market stations within 18 months.Naturally only a rumor but if the past is any indication it couldn't be too far fetched. At least people have that much time to look elsewhere.
