CLEAR CHANNEL PROVIDENCE

What can you tell me about the Providence market and the management team over at CC there? Looks like there are a few people on here who might have some good intel...pro, con, whatever. Just curious. And how are the stations doing?

You would have better job security at a local burger king if that tells you anything.

Figure that HJY and B101 are in the top 5 (depending upon diary placement could be anywhere from 1-5...market has been embargoed for over 2 years,so an exact picture is very cloudy). B101 is voicetracked except for mornings, Coast & HJJ are a mess, WHJY has been rock king for almost 2 centuries; but they are running bare bones over there (they have a former PD doing traffic in the afternoons on Coast when not washing the windows).

Thanks WKND92 for the thoughtful response...how about the management? What's the scoop on the GM, PD;s, DOS, LSM? How many air shifts are actually voice tracked from out of market and how many in house?

HJY was a Rock King for two centuries? Are you sure about that wknd92? Please verify if you could and then come back here and let me know. Thanks ;-) The rest of you... Shhhhhhhh

I think he meant decades. He probably didn't have his morning Joe yet.If any body is lost on WHJY only being rock what 26 years. It was beautiful music prior to 1981 as "JOY 94". hence the call letters WHJY for JOY. just in case someone under 25 is reading this.

Which would be a great April fools joke for Charles to do beautiful music his whole shift one year as an April fools day joke as JOY.
Now that would be hillarious.

Left it out there for you and you took the bait....April Fools you dummy! :)

And I well remember WHJY during its Beautiful Music days, when it was creamed by WLKW. Sounded like Pappy didn't clean up the audio-or have a chance to-after going from WHIM-FM.You'd hear the 25 Hz tones used to cue the next selection or spot. Audio was rather muddy as well.I can remember Mike Martin, one of my cohorts from WERI, being on the air there, with his FM 94-WHJY-Joy liners. Franz Laubert was also there for awhile.

Overnights were handled by the "Captain of Controversy" Steve White.

Having worked at the former WLKW-FM 101.5 (The Sound of Beautiful Music), back in the late 70's and early 80's, I also remember our chief-competitor, JOY (now '94 WHJY). People must've fallen off their chairs when '94 'HJY debuted at 12:01am, with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, on that infamous format-changing night/early morning :D

Trying to get back on subject, Mornings are local at HJY, B101 & Coast, B is tracked for the rest of the day off site, Coast is tracked on site up until Delilah off the sat and don't know how live HJY is during the day. HJJ is local for 2 hours at this point during the day w/ Helen Glover (same could be said for the Trail; but they are usually in the building when their shift is on up until nights).
There had been info going around of a hiring freeze for 1st quarter; but seeing as Tuesday we went into 2nd quarter, that could be off. WSNE just lost one of their people to Greater Media in Boston and as I have said, info on MGT over at Oxford St is mixed depending upon who you speak to (ie who got "wronged" by somebody in mgt). Providence is not a hopping market at the moment-very big clouds looming over both big clusters with corporate disruptions leaving a lot of things up in the air and having many wear 3-5 hats (ie Kristen Lessard is part of the B101 morning show and tracks middays on Coast, Bill George wears Program Director, News Director, Anchor & Traffic stripes, etc)

Actually B101 is tracked off site only for Mr Ed noon-6PM. Maybe they can have him track PMs on Coast too and brand the station as ED FM.

Sorry, Mc Radio is right. I don't want to paint it with such a wide brush...1/2 their midday and their total PM drive shift is tracked by Ed and then the tracks of Tom (Mark, maybe you can confirm if he is actually in studio for any part of the shift. I'm not sure even Art Spencer is anymore)

Who is Steve Peck, and why did he leave WSNE? And Rick Everett...current PD? What's he like?

Steve peck has bounced around New England radio for a long time now....He was up at WSRS I believe in the mid 90's, had been down here previous to that and a couple of other places as well.
Rick Everett has been in the RI radio scene for a long time as well (believe over at WRX (now WEEI-FM) in the late 80's to early 90's). In the brief times I have spoken to them, they seemed like nice people; but have never worked for or with either of them so I can't give any on the job experience

WHJY should have stayed WHIM-FM, look at what Cat Country 98.1 is doing now !! I know it probably didn't make sense at the time, but imagine if they had.

Rick has been in Providence radio since the mid 70s at least. Now he's programming 2 Clear Channel stations so it goes without saying he doesn't have much to work with other than his morning shows. With the classic hits station B101 he kind of just went with the flow of what the station was doing anyway. Frankly with Coast he has shown me nothing in terms of programming ability but in this day and age working for a company like Clear Channel you're a business person first and a programmer second and you do it to survive. If your posts are a way of feeling out taking a job at Coast figure on about 5 years max there unless they either flip or make way for the AM talker WHJJ to simulcast on 93.3. It's not a place I would relocate to Providence for unless you're an illegal alien.
