Clear Channel Pulls the Plug on Madison's Fourth of July Fireworks

Clear Channel, well known for its cheapness, even outdoes itself.

This is one you can't blame CC on what they did...

The link doesn't tell the whole story. Clear Channel didn't sponsor this event by itself. They had several other sponsors who participated in financially supporting the event. However, those sponsors decided to take a pass on it this year. Seeing that the event costs $70,000+, I don't too many broadcasters who have/had that kind of check book to support an event of its scope. As much as I loved watching those fireworks from my backyard when I lived in Madison in the pre-CC days...I also can understand that pockets don't run deep these days, whether your a local CC cluster or someone else. Considering that they barely made a meager profit from the event (which is the purpose of such NTR events), I can understand the change. I would imagine if Jeff Tyler could wave a magic wand and save the event, he would. (and no...I don't and have never worked for CC but I also know they don't deserve 100% of the crap thrown at them)

Organizers $60k Short

If someone writes a check for $60,000, the Elver Park fireworks on the Fourth of July could continue, but without that influx of new money, the 20-year tradition on Madison's southwest side will fizzle out.

Clear Channel Radio-Madison, chief sponsor of the event since 2004, pulled the plug Thursday, four weeks before the fireworks show, because four out of five corporate sponsors didn't make their anticipated contributions.

Jeff Tyler, Clear Channel vice president, said other sponsors were solicited but no one stepped forward to save the show.

"We spent a week and a half trying to get others," Tyler said today. "It's very difficult year to year to rely on new businesses coming in as sponsors."

Fireworks organizers met with Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz earlier this week to give him the bad news.

"The mayor was very disappointed," Cieslewicz spokesman George Twigg said. "It came as a complete surprise." ...

No Booms In Elver Park?

The Neighborhood Fireworks Display Needs A New Organizer.

Wisconsin State Journal :: LOCAL :: B1
Friday, June 8, 2007
Deborah Ziff

The Elver Park Fourth of July Fireworks show has evoked its last oohs and ahhs unless a new organizer steps forward.

Clear Channel Radio Madison announced Tuesday it can no longer afford to put on the fireworks show because it has been losing sponsors while costs have increased, said vice president and market manager Jeff Tyler.

"This is disappointing, but it reflects what most events of this kind face these days," Tyler said.

The company said it has been a challenge to pull off for the past three years and posted a $4,000 loss last year. ...
