Clear Channel selling Alaska stations

CC is dumping smaller market clusters all across the USA, if they can find buyers. Clear Channel has KASH, KBFX, KENI, KGOT, KTZN, KYMG in Anchorage, and KAKQ, KIAKam/fm, KKED in Fairbanks. Clear channel has ruined local radio across the country, so this might be great news. Any guess on who might want to pick up the stations as a group or individuals here in Alaska? Before the FCC allowed group clusters, radio was much better IMO.

A buddy of mine and I were talking about this earlier today. My guess is Entercom or Cumulus could step in to take over. Hopefully some local investors pool their money and buy them up, I'd love to see a locally owned group of radio stations come on the air. I wonder what formats get dumped when the new owners come on.

Agreed (and heartily so!) on the ownership issue. Just one thing--KIAK 970 AM in Fairbanks changed its call letters to KFBX this year (or late last year) and adopted the slogan, "The station that means Fairbanks."

It's actually a good slogan, as the letters "FBX" are frequently used here in Fairbanks as an unofficial abbreviation for the city's name on locally-used documents (when people sign up for telephone and electric service, etc.).

Thx Black Shire, while on the topic of Fairbanks radio, I see that 103.9(Kool fm KUWL) recently changed its call letters to KTDZ, but some sources have it listed as changing its format to Spanish. Is it still oldies, or has it changed? New Northwest still has KOOL 103.9 up as its webpage....thx

KUWL is now Ted

KUWL has become KTDZ and 103-9 Ted FM as of December 26th. The station adopted an Adult Hits format similiar to sister station KBBO in Anchorage. No Spanish in its future. Also...KXLR has become X Rock 95 dot 9 - matching up with X Rock 96 dot 3 in Anchorage. Both stations launch its new dual-market morning show soon and will feature their own local staff the rest of the day for their "Everything That Rocks" formats.

Thx Wolf, so, Ted is related to Anchorage's Bob, and the Everything that Rocks X format also will be shared with New Northwest Fairbanks and Anchorage stations. Thanks for clarifying... any other changes in the Golden Heart city?

Just want to keep it clear...while NNB Alaska is sharing programming ideas, etc, both markets are doing their own programming. The similiarity for the X stations will be the morning show...

What do you think of the country stations in Anchorage and Fairbanks (K-Bear, KIAK-FM and KASH Country) programmally?

I think KBRJ 104.3 (KBear) and KASH 107.5 stand up well to other country formats in the country. I'd give the edge to KBear, to me just seems like a bit better imaging and style. Both have been doing the format for years and years....Anchorage is a good country market still, while nationally it isnt even represented in NYC or LA the two largest markets. I really don't know much about KIAK Fairbanks, only heard it a few times when I pass thru the Interior.

It's easy to paint CC with a broad brush, but CC-AK has actually done well over the years. I'm not positive a new owner will be an improvement. Gary Donovan is a good manager, and the stations have sounded good for well over a decade. KGOT, especially, has been able to maintain decent numbers when others in the format have struggled.

Meaning others in that format elsewhere in the USA? KGOT's main comp is KFAT, but really have different programming/style, audience. Maybe CC has left its Alaska properties alone and Gary Donovan was allowed to have more of a free hand, he is good at what he does for sure!
