Clear Channel should sell WDIA

Clear Channel should sell WDIA to an individual in Memphis and bring back its old sound. It sounds good now, but does Bobby have the freedom to do what he wants in the morning? The music would really kick if WDIA was out of under Clear Channel.

Yes, I may be wrong, but that's the way I see it. WDIA should be Black Owned by a Memphis Group or Individual, not some Texas conservatives, and I'm a white man making these statements!

Sorry folks, just my 2 cents worth. I love WDIA!

Absolutely agree.

Although Sonderling & then Viacom were essentially white-owned, WDIA - it seems - had much greater autonomy then!

As a white guy who once had the pleasure of working at WDIA (in news) on-air for a few years (I'm no longer in the market!) - and who worked briefly for Clear Channel - I can't begin to describe how it turns my stomach that the Texas bean-counters acquired such a prized radio property!

Until Clear Channel fired some of the long time WDIA personalities like Fred Moore and Captain Curtis Lee, I thought they had done a good job of keeping the WDIA legacy going.

Even with those changes, WDIA is still a very special station with its mix of classic soul, blues, talk and gospel. They are also consistently in the top 3 which is amazing considering they are an AM station with a highly directional signal (unlistenable at night in most of the market) that still plays music. Bobby O'Jay is a genius at understanding how to program WDIA.

As the black population continues to move out beyond the inner city, I wonder if that will someday have a negative effect on WDIA's ratings. I've often wondered how well WDIA would do if they had a FM simulcast.

Do you think WDIA will perform as well once the PPM lands in M-town? Any thoughts on other stations that may thrive or dive once the paper diary goes away?
