Clear Channel soft AC HD-2 stations

Today, I tried pulling up the online stream for CC's soft AC HD-2 station, KODA in Houston. I received an error message, so I went into the CC website where all the HD stations are listed, and all the soft AC stations (the ones labeled "AC love songs") are gone; they've all changed formats, most of them to variety. The only one that's still broadcasting with a similar format is WLTW's "classic lite" format (it's more like "soft oldies" than anything else). I wonder how long it will be before CC winds up phasing out any type of "unique" programming they have on the HD channels and slap the same 'ol formats they have on their FM channels? :'(

Oh well, guess it's back to XM's "Heart" and other internet radio...

This sounds like it belongs on the AC board. The name of this board is very confusing. If you're even mentioning WLTW, that's not even considered soft AC any more.

"Soft AC" here refers to WDUV in the Tampa market, or WLOW in Hilton Head, or WGL in Fort Wayne.

Or any Timeless Favorites affiliate.

In my original post, I was refererring to WLTW's HD-2 station, not the main signal.

I guess the CC HD-2 stations are what you'd refer to as the original form of "soft AC" that used to be on the radio 20 yrs ago. Most soft AC's vary anyhow as far as their presentation goes. Some lean more to adult standards, while others lean more adult contemporary. You might not refer to those CC HD-2 stations as "soft AC", but they definitely were not "full-fledged" AC, either, as they were playing some of the "easy listening" artists such as Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, etc that AC's don't offer. That being said, I don't feel that this thread would belong on the AC board.

I don't really care for this mish-mash of adult standards and soft AC that's been evolving on radio for quite some time. I do listen to WDUV every once in a while online, but I would hardly classify them as "soft AC", and I'd much rather listen to something which plays less standards and more contemporary fare mixed in with it, as XM's "Heart" does. For my tastes, WDUV plays way too many standards. I'd much rather have one or the other to listen to: just adult standards or soft AC instead of both of them running simultaneously, such as what "Timeless Favorites" does.

i love the streisand, diamond, manilow, olivia newton-john, etc. type old AC you are referring to. i agree that WDUV is too many standards. i also agree that it's a darn shame that even the HD-2 stations are changing format. if HD is supposed to be an alternative to satellite radio, then why are the HD-2 stations becoming as cookie-cutter as the regular ones?

i too am a huge xm fan and the heart is decent, but i don't appreciate the new songs mixed in. going from the carpenters to n'sync is not my cup of tea. yeah, both are love songs, but in this genre, sirius has xm beat. sirius's easy listening channel 4 is what the heart should be. love songs from the 60s through the 80s. no 90s or 2000s. either that or xm should create another channel. love songs 60s through 80s. love songs 80s through 2000s.

VChimp - Actually, WGL is back to the Dial Global Adult Standards format. Of course, depending on what time of the day you listen, that could be considered Soft AC as well.

I know that in Detroit, Clear Channel AC WNIC, which had been running a "100.3% Love Songs" format on its HD-2 channel, flipped it to Classic Dance. Haven't heard it, but if it's anything like WNIC's Flashback Weekends, they play "I Will Survive," "Le Freak" and "Stayin' Alive" every two hours.

However, Greater Media-owned competitor WMGC (Magic 105.1) still has "More Magic Radio" which is similar to KTXR's new "Timeless Love Songs" format (a hybrid of Standards and traditional Soft AC), and also plays Classical music at night (a probable nod to the 105.1 frequency's past as classical WQRS, which lasted from 1960 to 1997).

Okay, I was going by what had been reported here.

Like I said, I don't know why anyone would listen to that mess.

I disagree with those who have posted here saying WDUV plays too many standards. Based on what they're playing according to their web site, they're playing too much AC.

The Arbitron rating site says they're AC, though. Not soft AC, but AC.

That's not unusual for Arbitron. I've seen several instances where they label soft AC stations as AC.

I've seen several different sources online list WDUV's format, sometimes adult standards, sometimes as soft AC.
