A thousand jobs may not be a large amount in terms of the 2.9 million the country's expected to lose in 2009, but it's enough to devastate our industry and might certainly go a long way toward convincing others that deregulation has been a failed experiment.

I guess if those who control news outlets are determined to work outside the public trust and manipulate the news content that reaches America, it's probably going to be up to nontraditional media to report on their doings.

Gee, if only there were some way that the average Joe could write something and have it reach a lot of people all at once! Almost like the magic click of a button. We could call that button "send/forward." It would be like a magical web of inter-activity.

Indy media and citizen bloggers aren't necessarily journalism, no. Then again, CNN uses iReporters. Chris Crocker got his message out ("Leave Britney alone!") without any journalism credentials at all. *shrug* Mass-communication resources are out there, that's all I'm saying.

I'm guessing there are a lot of intelligent, articulate individuals who aren't beholden to any particular corporation right now. There may very well be, oh, random number, say, a thousand more by the end of next week.

Don't go jumping off the ledges ... yet.

Keep in mind that this "cutting back the fat" may not ... and in this opinion ... probably will not ... be as major on air staffs as it will sales staffs and ancilary staffs in promotion and other departments.

Not that cuts won't be made in air talent and support staffs ... but it may be more about sales and administration staff cuts than on air.

Reliable word from Dallas was that it comes down to revenue being made in all dayparts, not about "salaries" per se. That leads to sales ... and how those teams and staffs bring about the revenue for dayparts ... and the stations. If revenue is down ... so will be the sales staffs. If the revenues for certain dayparts are down then that's when it affects air talent and staffs.

I think that sales cuts will be emphasized ... then administrative staffs ... then support staffs ... then on air talent if salaries don't equal expected revenues.

That's business. Not about wholesale cuts because of salaries. Wholesale cuts because of lack of revenues.

Sales staff losses will be big, in my opinion.

There will be cuts in sales, support, and management, but you're forgetting the Clear Channel commitment to syndication. If they have their way, they'll be the terrestrial radio version of XM, but with fewer channels. You'll see a dozen "superstations", and whole lot of repeaters.

It's obvious that they certainly don't understand how to make a PROFIT from it.
