Clear Channel Would Consider Purchase Of ABC Stations

Clear Channel Would Consider
Purchase Of ABC Stations

R&R ... this even made the top of Drudge Report:

Clear Channel Radio CEO John Hogan says that if the Walt Disney Co. ever follows though with its long-rumored sale of ABC Radio's O&Os, his company would be a potential suitor. "We have, and will continue to have, a very keen interest in improving our portfolio," Hogan tells MarketWatch.com. "There are a number of stations that Disney owns that we could very easily add to our existing portfolio, and do very well with." However, Hogan says any deal would have to make financial sense. He insisted Clear Channel wouldn't overpay just to get its hands on the stations. "We have a long history of having a very responsible financial model that we apply to potential purchases, and if we could do it, and have it make sense, we would certainly be interested," he said. "The question is, 'At what price?'"

If the Evil Empire purchases the Mouse's radio holdings, there would be tons of dumping. As you know, CC is either at limit or one under in most major markets. They would have to unload two or more underperforming stations per market to get down to the FCC maximum of seven stations per market

Case in point...Chicago

CC owns seven stations including: a weak signal AM Real Oldies station, an AM Gospel station and the #1 & #2 rated urban stations in the market. ABC owns three stations: an underperforming active rocker, a sports station and the gem - WLS-AM. (Note of irony for those over 45: ABC owns WLS and WMVP which is on 1000AM, the old WCFL. Somewhere, Barney Pip is really turning to peanut butter.) Who wouldn't want that stick? Obviously CC would jettison: the Real Oldies station, the FM rocker and the AM gospel station. As a business move, CC would benefit from WLS's stick but there is nothing else of value in Chicago they could get.

I don't think CC is gonna buy Disney. Just my guess. I could be wrong; after all, I said TRG would never be back on the air.

It's radio, not brain surgery - Jim deCastro

When in Atlanta, listen to 85 FM DIRK!</P>

WGST-AM, WKLS-FM, WBZY-FM, WLTM-FM, WWVA-FM are their stations, plus WVWA-FM (96.7) is still in their holding. If they bought ABC radio's holdings (WYAY-FM, WKHX-FM) here, I think they'd be at their limit. They plan to sell WHEL-FM (105.1) from what I understand. CC has holdings in north and south Atlanta as well, so they might spin off one station to another cluster depending on where the tower is. 96.7 used to be in the Atlanta South/Midwest Georgia cluster; 105.3 could easily make that move as well.

Maybe it's time CC gave up 96.7. Obviously, that station has been one of its weakest links.

That noise you hear is the sphincter muscles of all ABC employees tightening just thinking about being part of CC. Ouch! Poor folks.
