Clear Channel's AC playing Oldies.

I'm surprised that Clear Channel's AC stations plays Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle" once in a while. It shows on their Premium Choice playlist and their regular programming on some of their stations once in a while. I think CC is really good keeping 70s in their playlist while keeping up with new stuffs as well. Really, "Cat's In The Cradle" is folk rock and it's really old on AC which should be on Classic Hits only.

I'm also surprise that KOST/Los Angeles and KSNE/Las Vegas plays Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" '68 and Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" '61, that's like deep oldies on AC stations in 2011. It looks like CC favors old materials with new materials a lot. It's crazy that CC throws in stuffs that are half a century old into their AC playlists while most classic hits stations are already fixing to phase out this kind of stuffs. Hmm... impressive. What do you guys think about CC's AC stations playing this kind of stuffs?

As I've said on here for quite a while, personally, I think it's time for AC to move on from the 70s (maybe one every hour), since Hot AC has been moving away from the 80s. Classic Hits is really embracing the 70s these days.

I guess I can see Clear Channel's AC's leaning older, since a lot of their Hot AC's still include a fair amount of 80s music. Their Classic Hits stations still play more 60s than other companies', so maybe their adult stations are more conservatively programmed? I don't know....WMYI in Greenville, before they went more towards Hot AC and ditched 70s and a lot of 80s, was extremely old leaning - sometimes 4 70s songs an hour!

Depends on the target of these radio stations. We've moved to the point where 70s music appeals to a 50 plus demo. Kind of out of what many advertisers want today.

^ Agree. I can see AC stations in markets with no classic hits station leaning a bit older. However, like some of the 60s songs that stuck around well in to the 2000s on AC's (and on a few, today even), I don't think the 70s will disappear from most AC's for several more years, as some songs from that decade still test well 25-54 (under 50).

The songs you mentioned are 80s hits that just happened to have a previous life. No one had ever heard Wonderful World until it was featured in Good Morning Vietnam. Stand By Me would've been phased out years ago, if not for the movie. Unchained Melody, Oh, Pretty Woman, these are all songs that found new life with a younger audience.

If you count TV commercials as "new life," you can throw in almost the whole Oldies/Classic Hits format --- or so it seems.

Also the original Righteous Brothers version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", from "Top Gun".

Nothing wrong with the 70's. I'd rather hear that on A/C than some cheesy 90's music.

Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" was re-released when it was included on the soundtrack to "Good Morning Vietnam" in 1987, so it ge3ts more airplay than a song from 1968. Same goes for "Unchained melody" from the soundtrack to "Ghost" in 1990. Re-releasing a song and having it hit again moves it up to a more recent era.
