Their morning show may be live and local. It used to be, but it would be no surprise to learn their entire schedule is now voice-tracked.
KYOT fills a niche, and draws listeners. I assume it makes money since they spend so little on talent by cherry-picking other markets for announcers.
But I would argue that it's a waste of a frequency. Unless there is compelling evidence that it makes so much money by being piped into dentist offices, it should be blown up.
I once proposed moving the KYOT format to 96.9 and putting KFYI on 95.5. "Ninety-five point five-fifty KFYI" since KTAR will soon be at 92.3. Mix would go away. But I suspect Clear Channel will not do that.
I also suspect that KFYI will soon lose some ratings heft. Clear Channel will not spend the money it will take to keep KFYI on top. The staff at KTAR is p.o.'d that their status as top dog is over and they are very, very hungry to get it back. Bonneville has the resources to get them there. Clear Channel just doesn't care.
Having said that, KFYI still has the superior talk show lineup. KTAR has the news resources. After all, Mike Anthony didn't jump ship to KTAR just for the heck of it.
