Clear Channel's Payola Investigation Over

They've fired two people named in the Spitzer investigation, but won't release the names of who they canned.

Is anyone cleaning out their desk at KHTS?<P ID="signature">______________

There is nothing that requires a live commercial spot - which those are - has to be ID'ed as "This is a paid commercial announcement." I do believe all that's required is to log it as commercial time.

*sound of BUZZER*
WRONG!!
Those are paid for as commerical spots and they are either read live as a bumper into spots, most of them being show or segment sponsors of the show, or they are PAID endorsements. If you want to get rid of those, expect to not see any entertinament star in any ad ever again. In fact, why don't we put robots in them instead.

The government and yourselves should be more worried about the doctor/drug company relationships. Getting bonused on writing more scripts for a certain drug is ALOT MORE life threatning than a couple of records being played more here or there.

It must be clear who is sponsoring the spot, which is usually acheived by clear identification of the sponsor per the FCC Sponsorchip Identification Rules Title 47, 73.4242.

For example, a teaser that says "Car prices explode in Southtown this weekend" does not meet the ID rule. If they add "Ford prices explode..." it does.

So, some form of sponsor ID is a requirement. Sying "this is a paid commercial" is not, and these are usually station policy, not the FCC (political is a different animal, with rules on usage, LUR, etc)

Michael Saunders was also a casualty of the investigation. Here is a portion of the story from AllAccess:

From AllAccess:

"Without details or preamble, a memo from CLEAR CHANNEL Sr. VP/Programming TOM POLEMAN was released today concerning the exit of WWPR/NEW YORK PD MICHAEL SAUNDERS:

"Please be advised MICHAEL SAUNDERS [sic] is no longer with CLEAR CHANNEL. We wish him all the very best in his future endeavors. For the time being, (VP/Urban Programming) DOC WYNTER is Interim Program Director. Please direct any programming questions or issues that you would normally send to MICHAEL to DOC WYNTER. DOC is arriving tonight and will be in the station tomorrow. Any press inquiries should be directed to (SVP/External Communications For Radio & Public Relations) LISA DOLLINGER."<P ID="signature">______________

Do they get to keep the TV's?????

Can we consider this a variation of "Video Killed the Radio Star?"

The investigation may be over, but I would not be surprised if other people get terminated over the next week or so.

I would find it hard to believe that only two programmers---one in San Diego, the other in New York---would become the only Clear Channel employees to lose their jobs.

Don't be so sure. Laird and Saunders are going to have a difficult time finding programming gigs. None of the major broadcast companies will want to attach themselves to people who appeared in the Spitzer report. Look at former WKSE/Buffalo PD Dave Universal. He proclaims his innocence, but has had to resort to taking a job at a Canadian station just across the border from Buffalo as a "consultant" to keep working. I have a hard time believing that Infinity, Entercom, Citadel, Radio One etc. would want to give the appearance of condoning payola by hiring Laird or Saunders. Chances are the two programmers will wind up working for independent operators in smaller markets for far fewer dollars than what they were making at Clear Channel. I'm sure there are many other PD's who have been on the take for years, but if they didn't appear in the report and no one rats them out, chances are they'll be safe. It's not fair, but that's how it works.

But I thought Jack killed Star????

Those two were the highest profile, so there was zero doubt they had to go. You could be right in that there may be others to follow. They did say that some others had been suspended (maybe for the duration of their looking into some of their activities).

Geez, I haven't seen this much hostility to female programming person since Susan Hoffman was in charge of the KSDO/Gannet combo!

I don't think this has anything to do with her being a woman...<P ID="signature">______________

Re: TV Guide

Did she get to keep the big screen?. Reminds me of a early
90's big time CHR PD I knew of, bragged about having his
entire home office furnished by one of Indy Record companies,
(fax machine, computers, phone systems, furniture) He got
canned and had to use that office to of coure..become a
consultant.
