Recently Clear Channel has tweaked some of its classic rock stations' formats (WQMF and WFBQ at least). They are calling it "Real" classic rock. It is similar to the "classic rock that rocks" format that they had a few years ago. They have added a few hair band songs and some harder guitar songs. Gone are anything that was from the 90's (like STP, Nirvana, 90's U2, Lenny Kravitz) and non guitar lead artists (Steely Dan, Beatles (classic rock without the Beatles!! lol), Billy Joel, and many more).
What gets me, is that they have even run a few promos saying that other stations are not playing real classic rock because they play Steely Dan and Elton John. What a load of BS! These are the artists that built these stations. A month ago they were good enough to be played but today they suck??!!
Classic Rock is a very tired format and definitly needs changed. But elminating songs is never a good idea. I wish someone would try opening up the format like it was in the 80's AOR heyday.
New rock, hard rock, softer rock, old rock.
I miss the days when a rock station could play Led Zepplin next to Huey Lewis, next to Quiet Riot next to Skynrd next to INXS next to U2 next to Heart. With such strict targets for demos, I doubt any station will ever try this (especially a CC station). Clear Channel is the reason why I have recently subscribed to XM.
