Clear Channel's WOR Bidding For Yankees Future Broadcasts

And I'm sure CBS will want to keep both teams as well. Can you imagine the bidding war that's going to break out for the rights to these teams if CBS, Clear Channel and Disney/ESPN are all vying for the rights?

Look at how well having a NYC MLB franchise helps WCBS and WFAN. According to a recent BIA/Kelsey survey, WCBS is the station with the fourth highest billing in the U.S. (WTOP #1, KIIS #2, WHTZ #3) and WFAN comes in ninth. I'm sure WCBS wouldn't be #4 (and the highest billing AM station) without the Yankees help.

Gee, maybe so-called "Newsradio 880" could actually become an all-news station for a change.

Notice WTOP made number one without ballgames.

But baseball revenue is expensive revenue...low margins. It may not make sense for WCBS to bid any higher or it might be a money losing situation. An all sports station can justify a money losing p-b--p deal but a news station can't.

CC's possible offer isn't surprising. CC has baseball on its other news/talk outlets. Historically, the Yankees have been on a station that caters to them. The Yankees, regardless of their place in the standings, will not accept being bumped in September for a Giants or Jets game. That could really be a sticking point with WFAN since they recently re-upped with the Giants. WEPN has a similar deal with the Jets.

IMHO, the Yankees could go to WOR simply because the station will cater to them. :)

Does anyone think that CC could offer to simulcast some Yankee games on one of their FM stations? Two, if CC wins the Yankee radio rights what would happen to Rutgers football whenever there are conflicts? Normally, Rutgers football isn't a hot property but with their admission to the Big Ten Conference there may be more interest in that program than usual. How much, I don't know. But certainly more than if RU was still in the Big East. Lots of match-ups against the likes of Penn State and Michigan. Maybe RU could use the opportunity to get to a more Jersey-friendly FM station, like WNSH.

The Yankees are going to want FM coverage. Which Clear Channel FM gives it to them to go along with WOR? WAXQ? That will be problematic for Clear Channel. Certainly not Lite or either CHR.

Could this be a sign that Clear Channel will launch an all-sports station in New York??

Think about this: CC distributes Fox Sports Radio, and I could see CC take one of their current stations flipping to sports (with mostly or entirely FSR programming to start, although they could add some local shows later), along with the Yankees and Rutgers.

I would think that either Clear Channel will move WOR from 710 AM to 104.3 FM and make 710 all-sports, displacing WAXQ or flip WAXQ itself to sports (New York isn't a strong rock radio market at present, so 'AXQ may be "expendable").

And there is one other sports property a CC-owned all-sports station in New York could probably get cheap: The New York Islanders. In recent years, the Isles have been on a small noncommercial FM on Long Island that barely reaches Brooklyn (where the Isles will play their home games starting either this Fall or in 2014; I don't know exactly when) and doesn't reach Manhattan (unless one has a powerful FM receiver and antenna).

I would think CC could make a deal to get the Isles cheap, and since they are about to play home games at Barclays Center, the team will want to have a strong-signal radio presence in New York City itself.

Should CC get the 2013/14 Islanders' rights and the 2014 Yankees rights in the next few weeks, I could see the company launching an all-sports station in New York early this Fall, in-time for hockey season. If CC gets the Yanks for 2014, but not the Isles for the upcoming season, it would be in late February or early March, in-time for pre-season Yankees' games broadcast from Florida.

How about this as a "wild-card":

CBS Radio New York keeps both the Yankees and Mets, but moves the Yankees to WFAN-660/101.9 and moves the Mets to either WCBS-880 or WINS-1010.

If CBS keeps the Yankees, I expect that "The Fan" will be the team's flagship next season, even if the company also keeps the Mets.

Imagine the promotional possibilities: "The Number-One Name In American Sports, the New York Yankees, Are Now On The Number-One Name In Sports Radio, WFAN!".

The Bronx Bombers and WFAN would be a marriage made in media and baseball heaven.

There's no way that CC would flip Q104.3! NYC is a rock town! Without Q104.3 there would be no variety! Have you scanned the FM Dial in this market? 90% of the stations are playing the SAME types of music!!!!!We have 3 CHRs, 3 Urbans, 3 A/Cs, 1 Country, 1 Oldies, 1 Classic Rock, 3 Spanish language stations including a tropical music, Spanish CHR, & Spanish A/C station, 2 Sports stations (which are both doing terrible),

The suggestion was whether CC might offer Q104 for Yankees play by play, not a format shift.

2 Sports stations (which are both doing terrible),

Huh? Both are doing exceedingly well.

WAXQ is the 6th highest biller in the market. It is not flipping; it does not matter whether there is a "strong" rock market in New York... which is indeed true... it matters that WAXQ is doing extremely, extremely well.

CC wouldn't flip Q. If anything, they would air Yanks coverage and then go back to Q as usual. That's what they do with WMMS here in Cleveland with the Indians and did with the Browns.
