ClearChannel Sandusky, WLKR changes

ClearChannel Sandusky is advertising for a new station manager. Who is the current station manager?
Also, does anyone know the status of the ClearChannel Sandusky sale?

Not connected to ClearChannel, but what's the deal on WLKR out of Norwalk? They went from a soft rock format, to some sort of mix of older, not so great music, and some tunes not easily recognizable. Quite frankly, it sounds terrible. I understand radio tastes can be objective, but who exactly are they trying to target?
Who's bright idea was it to make a change? That station has undergone some changes since they moved to Milan 4-5 years ago. Some of the changes were ok, but others have been horrible. Just who's responsible for that?

It's AAA

From their website: "We're an adult station appealing to those with a discerning taste in music."

Imagine a combination of modern rock, new wave, and classic rock, with a large music library to choose from. WLKR's just taking a cue from Detroit's CIDR/93.9 "The River," which is a shining example of how the format should be. (Truth be told, CIDR is very audible in Cleveland, more so than 'LKR, so it's my primary station of choice in my car.)

It's the type of format that SHOULD be in the Cleveland market, for that matter. Just think if K-Rock evolved into AAA...

Oh, and to answer the questions:

1) I'm not sure who CC/Sandusky's market manager is right now. Last I was able to check, Lisa Rice was in that position, but she was transferred to Phoenix last year. Don't have a clue now on how the sale of the cluster is going along, what with the not-so-GoodRadio.TV debacle...

2) Tim "Kelly" Parkinson is the market manager for WLKR and all Elyria-Lorain stations, and likely made the format change.

nathan,

Thank you for the information.

Maybe you can answer a few more questions. If WLKR has such a large library of music, why do the same songs seem play all the time? I get into work at 6:30AM, and there's times I can almost set my watch to the same song at the same time.
With all the sports (Indians, etc,) that station carries, you'd think it'd be days before you'd hear the same song again. Again, the music just doesn't seem all that appealing. I wonder who, if anyone was consulted before this change was made.

Plus, in the morning Greg or Craig seems to bring up some of the most off the wall and most boring topics. Politics, clips from Bill O'Reilly and so on are a big turnoff.
The other guy Scott does ok news and sports during the morning, but he's nothing special.

The girl who takes over at 10 is ok, and after that, I stop listening, unless there's an Indians game later.

So Sandusky radio is in limbo right now?

Lisa Rice was actually transferred to Lexington, KY last year. Currently, there is no market manager for Sandusky. They are interviewing for the position now. My understanding now is that the sale of the cluster may not close until March '08. Both CC and Frequency License LLC are in litigation against each other right now.

WLKR sounds great...it's the only station in the area that offers up a good variety of music...that's what most of the "everyday listener wants...somew of my friends are in brooadcasting and I always tell them that they are too close to the business...they need to step back and talk to people like us out there..the real listener and the consumer. On the CC front...there's rumblings that the entire Frequency LLC deal fell apart...the litigation is only being conducted to see how much money CC will keep from the downpayment. Watch for the CC stations to go back on the market very soon...things are way to quite out there...these deals should have closed long ago...

Hey Mikey! What's up? I spoke with Lisa last June and she was in TALLAHASSEE, FL. Last I knew (as of yesterday) Paul Mize is the MM. However, also was told there's been some shaking up there too with the release of a traffic person and production person. So................looks like the Hut is shakin'!

Tallahassee Florida is a nice place.

The latest negotiations is the Frequency LP doesnt want all these stations. Actually they dont even want Ohio or West Virginia at all. So this should make it even more interesting in the end. Elyria Lorain may go after the hut once again, who really knows.

Who is going to own these stations is still a mystery. I bet the folks in Defiance, Mansfield and Ashtabula are feeling good right now.

You're right about that! It's anyone's guess as to what will happen in Sandusky. It's a shame though, what should be a stepping stone for the 'farm team' has become a retirement home. OUCH!

I cannot help but be cynical of the CC-Frequency Partners deal...The sale to Goodradio fell thouugh and now this! And then ther's this "aloha trust" (whatever that is)going on with some of the other CC outlets.

WLEC/WCPZ/WMJI will continue to operate out of that dilapidated army barracs near Cedar Point until someone local steps up to the plate and saves it!

I smell something rotten in Radio Babylon!

Frankly I wish CC would go aloha, byebye, down the john with Enron. They are destroying radio!

CC Sandusky cluster had been temporarily GM-ed by Paul Mize for the last year or so who has now gone back to being Production/Traffic/Continuity after the Traffic/Continuity & Production people were recently fired. Dave Kelley formerly of Cumulus is soon to take over as "permenant" GM until sale goes through. March of '08 supposedly on the sale.

WLKR 95.3......the FM VOICE of the #1 OHIO STATE BUCKEYES, the CLEVELAND INDIANS, the CLEVELAND CAVALIERS and, oh.....SPORTS VOICE OF THE FIRELANDS....Norwalk/St. Paul/Willard/Monroeville/New London/St. Mary's and ESPN 1510!!!!

Not sure if anyone can tell what is going on at the Clear Channel/Sandusky group when their own morning show host (Nancy) has no idea.....let alone what is going on in the market around them. This might be the case when you say ..... "Who's on First???"..... don't believe it's Randy Hugg...he may have had the OM title at one time....BUT...times have changed ! Chances are better to tune in on a local station giving the listener what they want......can I hear... 95.3 WLKR??? THANK YOU!! ;D

Hey Sandy...just my two cents...from a sports freak...Elyria Lorain stations do a nice job sports wise but don't hold a candle to the BAS stations, Eagle 99/WFRO or The Wolf/WOHF...Tons of high school sports on both stations, OSU football and basketball, NFL all the way through the SuperBowl and The biggest Racing events held in the region...sports coverage second to none... It's a sports addicts dream!

Maybe the Wolf should have switched to All sports/News rather then oldies....

WFRO easily could take ESPN Radio if they wanted. Flip over to mono and you would get better fringe coverage as well. Note that WLKR-AM is only a daytimer, which would give ESPN at least some leverage if they wanted a 24-hour clearance in Sandusky. Which is a bit tricky, as WKNR does saturates the Sandusky area during the day with their 50 kw signal, but is a rumor at night.

I'd also point out that WFRO's former AM sister was a turnkey ESPN affil prior to ABC shuttering it down in late 2002.

Ummmm... It's freakin' S-A-N-D-U-S-K-Y! ::) Geesh! It is what it is!
