Clearfield Broadcasters Legacy

Greetings! Admins, you can delete if not permitted...

I have been reinvigorated with the legacy of the former Clearfield Broadcasters, Inc (WCPA/WQYX) radio station which was located in Clearfield, PA. I worked there for a mere 15 months but it was one of the best early/teenage jobs I could ever imagine. Many tales and antics within that station as well as learning lessons that cemented my early broadcast foundations. To that end, I do not want to see that former station fade into obscurity which is why I created a legacy page off of my website to share the memories and photos of the station. WCPA-WQYX – Clearfield-County.com is where you'll find many photos and a couple videos of myself and my late friend's memories. Again, this is to keep the legacy alive not to promote the domain itself.

Thanks for putting this together and mentioning it here - I really enjoy reading things like this! Lots of fabulous pictures, too!

Glad you all approve.

When hobby time allows, my endeavor is to recreate the AM booth with as much of the equipment we had in the studio when I departed for the US Air Force 30 years ago today. At the moment, I have the correct 10 channel Ampro, EV RE16, Tascam mk112, 5 ITC cart machines, carts, even the "lazy susan" cart shelf (although the smaller, single row version as we had the double row per side), and a Digilink II (unknown if it works). We had a Digilink III that I know IDJM has been working on piecing several together to make a couple or more working systems.

The 3D rendering I created is what the studio looked like and I plan to replicate to eventually do a streaming hobby station (still deciding about the Part 15 add-on). My podcasting fills the broadcast "itch" but still miss the tangible switches, swapping carts, following a schedule, etc. Again, thanks all!

Two of your early photos were of the recently passed Fred Koeberle. Fred began his broadcasting career in Clearfield in 1954. He eventually went to Altoona, Youngstown and then Erie, working at WSEE-TV and later WEYZ-AM, the Music Of Your Life in Erie. I was Fred's PD on WEYZ from 1988-1991 after I spent 5 years at then co-owned K104 (WCCK-FM) Erie.

Do you have 5 cart machines because a few are for the studio and the rest are spare parts? Or are you going to use all of them?

The studio had 3 and I'll use just 3, but have 5 total. 2 will most likely be spare unit or spare part units, as time goes on.

I have 4 ITCs that are just play out, 1 is an SP with the recording/reproducer, and I have the Delta with a reproducer but later discovered it needs some maintenance at least on the middle deck (ate a cart). It was my excuse prior to obtaining a Spotmaster to record on the carts.

My delay is that I have a large family, full-time job, and just keeping up with things. Hoping I can get some time to finally get to it soon.

I appreciate all you are doing to keep the WCPA legacy alive. I started working there when I was 15 on the FM side. I then moved up to do morning and afternoon shows an AM. These shows were live with records and no satellitle radio. I covered a lot of local news there which was wierd to say the least. I knew Bob Day very well as we worked together for many years. I left when I was 30 but suffered unmercificably through the 80s music. I could tell you stories of the antics which make WKRP look like a kids show. I realize there are no photos of the old gang but we sent WCPA atop arbitron. I wish the earlier guys could be recognized.
