A posting on here a while back mentioned some cutbacks at Ch. 3... but I'm hearing there may be more this week? Anyone care to chime in?

They've lost the D'Backs. Most, if not all of the Suns next year. Lost most of their lead in the morning ratings...
And didn't I hear they may be loosing Oprah?

A tvspy.com post mentioned that anchor have been let go. Does anyone have the details?

Plus, I hear that Gannett is announcing corporate-wide cutbacks tomorrow. Any advance details on this?

I thought 45 ran the Suns games not 3TV

Many KTVK employees will be making hard choices over the next few days. Apparently, they can lay themselves off and take a severance package. Some of them don't have a choice: the graphics department, Heather Moore and Bryan Webb were laid off Wednesday.

KPNX lost some of its graphics people earlier this week.

Getting rid of Heather Moore is a shame, what's next Beverly? :'(

The Suns are on Channel 45. I don't think they're going anywhere. The team contracts with KTVK for their halftime news reports (something Fox can't do anything about from what I understand, since the team buys time on KUTP and therefore has control over what gets on the air).

Giving up the D'backs was the dumbest move that station's made since becoming an independent. And, from what I've heard, it was Belo's decision, although the D'backs were equally dumb not to ink a deal with another station - either AZTV or Channel 45 would have been a good home for them.

And didn't I hear they may be loosing Oprah?

If so, Belo had better do whatever it takes to get a network affiliation back - even if it means selling or closing KASW and moving The CW to Channel 3. They lost their male audience when the D'backs left. If Oprah's gone, they have pretty much nothing.

Frank had moved from weekends to Good Day Arizona weekdays at 11am with Olivia. Don't know his current status as of this week. I wonder if he is one of those who got a buyout offer with a severance package.

On a separate note, has Frank's wife recovered from the auto accident?

And amazingly enough, over on the azfamily.com forums is one topic titled
"KTVK Layoffs" with two posts so far:

http://www.azfamily.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=157933&sid=e2734641189b9d78e442e38dc5cf26de

Assuming the topic may disappear if corporate hatchetman Jack Sander
finds out their dirty laundry is being bandied about on their own website.

Yup, he'll get the IT guy to delete it. Wait a minute, the IT guy was one
of those laid off! Poor Jack. ::)

Outside the aforementioned sports programs did anyone actually watch KTVK? I took it off my menu after the Rupert Murdoch "rape" of the Phoenix TV scene years ago. Tried several times to catch something approaching the local news on their morning program but it always seemed like they were doing special on quilting or food shopping. I gave up.

Landtuna,

Sounds like you might be too old for the demos they are going for. It sounds like you are more a channel 12 or channel 5 viewer. Their demos trend on the over 55 crowd.

Well, Frank Camacho has reappeared...on GMAZ weekend this morning...with Tess Rafols. Honestly, Frank didn't look all that excited to be there and had a decidedly hoarse voice. He also made some comment about "weekend evenings, then middays, now GMAZ weekends" (not a bit bitter, I'm sure).

Actually, my morning routine is CNNH until 8 then switch to MSNBC until they begin repeating stories. I haven't watched a local morning show in many years. Actually, I don't watch any local programming, just a few network shows. Most viewing is done on satt.

What's even sadder about this was that the fired IT employee was one of the longest tenured people at the station - having been there when old Mac McFarland still owned the station in his later years.

If Mac and Jewell were still around to see this, they'd be upset to where KTVK has gone over the past few years.

Im guessing KTVK's glory days are over for now?. Or were they over when McFarlene sold the station?

Things made a turn when Del and Jewell sold the station. They were selective about a buyer, and they thought Belo would be the best group to "maintain the station's integrity." The scale tipped when the last of the MAC America managers left (former ND Phil Alvidrez was the final one). Then there's KTVK's "Saturday Afternoon Black Hole," which can be partially blamed on the FCC three-hour rule.

As for a revival of their "glory days," that won't happen unless they reconnect with a network. KPHO and KNXV currently have long term deals with CBS and ABC, respectively.

If they lose Oprah, that's their last nail in the coffin. Sure, they'll always have the popular sitcom reruns (which are cyclical, and don't have the staying power as Oprah), but they can't live on just those alone. They've even gone to airing standard infomercials in midday now (The Lewises only aired one hour of infomercials per week on KTVK when they owned the station).
