Cleveland a step closer to Franken FM

WXOX-TV changed it's calls to WLFM-LP on this modification to their construction permit with the FCC for analog TV channel 6, audio will be heard on 87.75 FM. No idea what they'll be playing:

Going on a Google search, the same calls and freq were used in Chicago (owned by Los Angeles-based Venture Technologies Group) till the station closed down at the end of April. They had a smooth jazz format, but in Cleveland, maybe AAA that we lost when V107.3 went back to The Wave. I'm piecing together snippets from various sites here, so everything may not be correct.

I see some of Venture's stations are Hispanic, I think that would be welcome in the Cleveland market. I think we have a big enough Hispanic population here in the city, and the stations in Lorain and the one out east don't reach the likes of the near west side, etc. I don't understand Spanish, but going Spanish or AAA (which I would like) wouldn't be a waste, IMO. Doing another smooth jazz would be a waste.

#dannykewl: espanol would fill a big format hole in Cleveland. don't see smooth jazz...already covered on 107.3. AAA would be cool, but doubt that hole will be filled, considering 107.3's crash and burn as an AAA. But, will be interesting to see what pops up.

So long as it is not yet another Christian station picking up a satellite feed from some station in California, like the new Air1 or K-LOVE station on 92.7 will be doing very soon with 250 watts from the same downtown site (W11th Street) that the on 91.9 broadcast from with only (a reported) 10 watts. I got the old 91.9 signal over about half of Cuyahoga County....I suspect the new 92.7 station will do even better.
While I have nothing against a Christian operation, we already have WCRF, WHKW, WFHM, and WCCD....not to mention WCUE and WILB.
Is there really a crying need for yet another?

I hope that this new Franken FM does a Spanish format. The fact that pirates keep popping up in Cleveland doing Spanish (there is one now on 87.9 on the near west side....but even THAT is religious!) must mean something.

Only problem: Aren't analog Franken FMs going away over the next several months? This would be a temporary "radio station" anyway, right?

Spanish is a good idea. Could help the neighborhoods get a station to receive. I'm just wondering how the other Spanish outlets would react. Plus, there's 87.9 running a Spanish music format in the city. Would that have to shut down or relocate?

87.9 is prolly an unlicensed station, so 87.9 will be wise to vacate 87.9 or change their frequency before the franken-fm starts up, as a licensed station being interfered on by a "pirate" station will prolly report the pirate station in a heartbeat to the FCC. The franken-fm may also runs tests before actually going on the air, and if they see that pirate there ... I have a "soft spot" for "pirates" as long as they aren't interfering with another station, as they often do a community good and provide services that are lacking by the corporate conglomerates. When I was a kid, I used to listen to pirates on the AM band, and DJ'ed at one for a bit in the early 70's.

I don't like the FCC cramming new stations into the non-commercial part of the band. Causes interference when the physical sites on the same or first adjacent frequencies are closer then what the FCC used to allow. What happened to "over-the-air radio is dying"? It isn't dying off if new stations are being set up.

Would they try a AAA with the new 99.1X coming on the air? How about a competitive talk radio station?

There's also 88.3 out in Painesville running 700 watts of Spanish programming.

The Painesville station is not receivable west of I-271 and I-90.

Those could be good ideas. Maybe a newer-focused AAA or another Modern Rock, especially for those who can't get 99X very well. The talk can be a good alternative (no pun intended) to WTAM and syndication/brokered on WHK and WERE. More good local content is needed.

Perhaps you throw in the mix a good Rhythmic or Dance CHR for those who are into club and party music. It is sorely needed in Cleveland for those who are tired of the same artists on three or four stations.
