Cleveland Afternoon Shows

Continuing the inventory check, here's the rundown of all the afternoon drive shows in Cleveland:

WKNR 850 - Afternoon R & R (local)
WTAM 1100 - Mike Trivisonno (local)
WWMK 1260 - Ernie D (syn-Radio Disney)
WJMO 1300 - Ed Powell (local)
WHK 1420 - Micheal Medved (syn-SRN)
WERE 1490 - America's Work Force (local)
WWGK 1540 - Loose Cannons (syn-FSR)

WCCD 1000 and WHKW 1220 are religious stations with no set PM drive shows

WCPN 90.3 - All Things Considered (syn-NPR)
WZAK 93.1 - Micheal Baidsen (syn-ABC/Citadel)
WFHM 95.5 - Mark Rein (local)
WAKS 96.5 - Kasper (local)
WNCX 98.5 - Micheal Stanley (local)
WGAR 99.5 - Chuck Collier (local)
WMMS 100.7 - Alan Cox (local)
WDOK 102.1 - Desiree McCray (local)
WQAL 104.1 - Heather B (local)
WCLV 104.9 - Bill O'Connell (local)
WMJI 105.7 - Action Jackson (local)
WNWV 107.3 - Rick "Rocco" Bennett (local)
WENZ 107.9 - Colby Cobb (local)

WKRK 92.3 and WHLK 106.5 don't use DJs
WCRF 103.3 is a religious station without a set PM drive show

A lot of the FM afternoon hosts are top notch. Here's what my top five would be:

1. Alan Cox (WMMS)
2. Desiray McCray (WDOK)
3. Mark Rein (WFHM)
4. Colby Colb (WENZ)
5. Heather B (WQAL)

Kasper, Michael Stanley, Chuck Collier, Bill O'Connell and Action Jackson are pretty good as well.

WERE actually has the last hour of Al Shapton from 3 until 4, America's Work Force, and brokered or network shows between 5pm and 7pm, so they don't too much of a set PM Drive show.

Michael Medved and Ed Powell would be the best on AM.

You forgot to mention most of the non-comm facilities. WCCD is not licensed to Cleveland proper, therefore on AM you probably should also mention WEOL (Sean Hannity), WDLW and even WJTB. On FM, due to their strong signal, WQMX would not be -- out of the question.

Extra credit trivia: Who did the Pop hit "Out of The Question" in 1973?

Thanks for laying that out.

My first thought is what will this look like in 2 years ? Will the syndication & automation replace some of these ?

Gilbert O'Sullivan.

Be sure to compare music jocks to music jocks and talk hosts to the same. otherwise it's apples to oranges.

Best PM drive music jock, Action Jackson. I've been critical of AJ in the past for not being as good as Scott Howitt. Not fair to Action. In his own right he's very good. The more I listen the less critical I am. I publicly apologize. With that said, his numbers are off... but he's up against Triv, Collier (Country Music Hall of Famer), Kasper and more. Classic hits not a 25-54 "darling" like it was 10 years ago. Yet he holds his own.

Great thread. Some thoughts..

Afternoon drive/music-personality wise, Action Jackson on Majic and Kasper on KISS are the best in Cleveland, hands down. Neither are dependent on liners and both put on "shows' around the music. (Action is very artist-info oriented, Kasper very pop-culture/phoner oriented) Both are syndicated on several stations throughout the CC empire and rightfully so.

I think I like Chuck Collier in middays on Majic moreso than in afternoons on 'GAR. That's just me though.

Heather B on Q seems okay so far, still too soon to give her a fair judgement. Still surprised Tim Richards (or even Kory) didn't take over afternoons when Jen Toohey moved to mornings.

Colby Colb on ENZ talks entirely too much for that format. I miss Sam Sylk - who was an AMAZING talent- and who could talk a lot as well but still be compelling.

The girl on WDOK (Desiree?) is good at reading liner cards- and that's what you do on a Soft AC format. Good for her.

Never listen to The Fish, sorry.

Hey 92.3 and 106.5, how about a voice? Would it really ruin your numbers? Nah. Not if done right. Costs $$$ though, I get it.

Talk shows? Alan Cox has grown on me. I was a big Maxwell supporter and was leary of Cox at first, but the show is pretty good. (Alan and Erica especially.)

Triv is Triv.

I like a solo Kenny Roda on WKNR in afternoons - if it can't be Rizz. Rizz in afts would be ideal. I just wish Roda would drop the "k, short for Kenny" bit.

Solid afternoon talent in Cleveland in afternoons overall.

Look at "Mike-FM" in Boston - which runs a format similar to WHLK - considering putting live DJ's on their air. I know Boston ain't Cleveland, but still...

Honestly, I don't think personalities are needed for 92.3 or 106.5.

92.3 still has PD Dominic "Nard" Nardella and production director Verlane on-air sporadically, usually with traffic reports but for other daily features as well. It suits both them and the station just fine.

And as long as 106.5 keeps their imaging, sweepers and music selection as fresh and lively as possible, they can get away with being a simple jukebox.
