Cleveland FM Radio

My post on AM had a nice response (thank you), so fair being fair I'll do the flip side now.

WCPN--NPR--Leans a bit too far left for my taste, but serves a purpose.

WXTM--modern rock--Rover will benefit from being in a Sternless universe, but overall still has the image of a Buzzard wannabe.

WZAK--urban ac--Joyner's a force in the morning, and the format itself has been doing solidly for a quarter century now.

WFHM--contemporary christian--Salem's golden child in the market, just picked up John Tesh, and is sticking it's toe in the soft rock pool just a touch.

WAKS--top 40--A force with the younger crowd, but how much "My Humps" can one take in a day?

WNCX--classic rock--Good thing it has Tom Petty's "Free Falling" in it's playlist, because that is the result of WNCX in a Sternless universe.
(Though to be fair, the music will keep it from being a bottom feeder)

WGAR--country--Solid as a rock, perennial Top 5 station.

WMMS--rock--Sean, Hunter, and Christy will benefit huge from being in a Sternless universe. Having the Browns doesn't hurt either.

WDOK--soft rock--Another solid station that keeps rolling along. Kinda neat going from a Carpenter's tune to a Faith Hill tune. The Fish is trying to go into their turf a bit.

WCRF--Christian--Been doing "preach and teach" for a long time.

WQAL--hot ac/top 40--seems to have settled in to a new schedule of Connor-midday, Toohey-pm drive, Leeza-evenings. KISS 96 is breathing down their necks.

WCLV--classical--Good that they saved the format, and trying everything to strengthen their signal, but still hurting from moving to 104.9.

WMJI--oldies--Lanigan and Malone will no doubt be undisputed kings of am drive in Sternless universe, plus the music will always be a ratings grabber.

WMVX--hot ac--Brian and Joe will pick up some Stern stragglers. becoming a hybrid DOK/Q104 combo type station.

WNWV--smooth jazz/easy listening--a nice change of pace from the KISS/Q/Mix noise.

WENZ--hip hop/rap--WZAK with extra hot sauce.

Overall, light years ahead of AM.
Edited by vjm on 12/17/05 05:27 PM.

They're balanced...you must not be listening long enough (although if it's mornings...can't blame you there.)

And Rover will be the only person in that building who'll benefit -- it certainly won't be the station overall.

I wouldn't say it's sticking it's toes in the soft rock pool...slightly extending their playlist. It's a niche format that is doing well for itself here.

Of course it's a "force" -- it's CHR and that's their demo. How much "My Humps" in one day? That kind of turnover for powers on a CHR is standard.

WNCX is probably one of the stronger, heritage classic rockers out there, while many other classic rockers will (most likely) be flipping very soon.

And keeps racking in the $$$ for Infinity.

Wow someone listened to them. Better get a diary to you right quick!

No they're not. KISS doesn't care about an upper 20's woman. Two different demographics. There's no sense doing anything with nights at WQAL as long as that horrid "Leeza At Night" is on.

I wouldn't give the music THAT much credit. If Lanigan and Malone were to retire on 1/1/06, WMJI would be in big trouble. And the sales staff better start sending out resumes.

WMVX is as close to a "Jack"-like station this market's gonna get for now.

> WNWV--smooth jazz/easy listening--a nice change of pace from

Niche format -- completely different demo altogether and does well for itself. I wouldn't be surprised if WZAK and WNWV share P1's.

> WENZ--hip hop/rap--WZAK with extra hot sauce.

Not similar to WZAK at all. Opposite demographics.

> Overall, light years ahead of AM.

Well, it should be! ;)

Agree. Rush, Hannity, the religo-flag wavers on WHK, or the Air America hosts rarely if ever promote actual dialog with responsible and articulate guests representing the opposing points of view (Rush has no guests period....only monologue with lemming callers). Opposing points of view are twisted out of shape by the hosts, or an inarticulate caller (a flower child for Rush, a gun freak for Franken). NPR almost always has two articulate spokespeople representing both sides. Some would say that the very idea of equal time is leftist by nature, so in that sense, they are probably leaning ever so slightly left (the network that is....local may be a different story).

However, in your review you missed the most valuable stations on the Cleveland FM dial. Here, I'll list them: WBWC, WJCU, WCSB, WKSU, WRUW and (yes) WKHR.
