Cleveland radio format change history

What format changes can you recall with Cleveland FM and AM stations? ( or other radio stations you may have grown up with) Particularly what kinds of stunting did stations do before launching a new format? Most recently of course we had 106.5 flip from mix to the lake and they stunted by playing literally everything. With radio 92.3 about to flip to sports I wonder if they will do any stunting on the night or weekend before the flip?

Cleveland doesn't experience too many format changes.

Let's see....only citing those I actually recall (not having paid attention to radio til about '83)...

WGCL to WNCX - 1985 or 86.

WMJI making the metamorphosis from AC/AC Gold to Oldies, 1989?

Power 108's flip to The End - wanna say '91. Used R.E.M.'s "The End of the World" on a mind numbing loop.

WMMS album rock (but CHR reporter) for lack of a better term to "Next Generation" alt rock, 1994 (to 96, then back to AOR, then mainstream rock '98, then morphing to the man cave format a few years ago).

Jammin' 92-3 flip to Jammin' Oldies - 1999 I believe.

WLTF/106-5's flip to MIX - 1998 (Fall?).

Oh, there's been a ton of changes over the years:

95.5 going from WCLV's 30 year plus classical format to the Christian Contemporary "Fish" in 2001.

850 going from WRMR's standards format to WKNR's sports in 2001.

1220 going from WKNR sports to WHK (later WHKW) religious in 2001

1420 from 1990-today:

Business talk to sports talk to religious (all as WHK) to standards (as WCLV AM/WRMR) to conservatalk (and the original WHK calls)

1300 going from WERE talk (be it brokered, urban, or otherwise) to WJMO gospel in 2007.

1490 going from it's long time R&B/Blues format to gospel in 1999 (as WJMO), then 8 years later swicthing to the WERE talk format.

107.9 going from alt-rock "The End" to Rap/Hip Hop Z 107.9 in 1999.

104.9 going from the WAKS "Kiss" format to the WCLV classical format in 2001.

107.3 going from it's 20 year smooth jazz "Wave" format to the AAA V 107.3 format just last year.

1460 since 2000 going from AC to a WCLV classical simulcast (as WBKC) to gospel in 2006 to libtalk last week (as WABQ)

1540 going from gospel to sports (KNR2) in 2006.

And 92.3 has gone through so much upheaval it's not even funny (Top 40 "Jammin 92" to "Jammin Oldies" to alt-rock "Xtreme 92.3"/K-Rock/"Radio 92.3" to the upcoming 92.3 "The Fan" sports format).

WENZ repeated the stunt just before flipping to Urban in 1999.

I'll just dial up the way back machine sherman...not sure of the year

107.9 WNOB goes from 24 hour Beutiful music to a split format 6am-6pm beutiful music 6pm-6am ABC AOR Love format with Brother John

98.5 WERE-FM airs automated Hit Parade 68

104.1 becomes WCJW automated country format.

The frequency swaps of 2001 (?) not really format changes per se' but we'll take 'em.

How could I forget about Wave to Boom/V107-3.

Or WHK1420 from oldies to business, which is what caused WMJI to go full oldies in '89.

The Big 1220 WGAR AM to Country Music Format in 1987

Or Nationwide's abandonment of WGAR/1220 in July 1990, selling it off to Douglas Broadcasting/Cablevision to become satellite oldies WKNR (the switch to all-sports was a soft one, taking place over a year).

Oddly enough, this weekend 25 years ago (August 14, 1986) saw the mass resignation of Malrite staffers from WMMS/WHK (Gorman, Sanders, Bernie Kimble, Spaceman Scott, et al) that all went to what would become the "North Coast eXpress," rock/CHR WNCX/98.5.

Which only lasted a few months because the owners had no money and no business smarts. Outwitted and outsmarted from the get-go.
