Cleveland Radio July Ratings

Cleveland Radio July Ratings

WTAM moving up, presumably due to Indians Guardians baseball. WCLV appears to be about the same despite moving to a better signal on 90.3.

KISS-FM getting spanked by not only 92.3 The Fan, but also Q104 (and WKDD in Akron - 2.9 for KISS, 3.5 for KDD) is surprising, and what's on WNCX-HD2? 106.5 getting such gangbuster ratings is definitely a surprise, too.

I doubt any changes are on the horizon, but given that KISS isn't beating any of the major players in either market, maybe iHeart will do something with the format after the holidays?

WNCX-HD2 is Album Pod which plays mostly album cuts from the classic rock era.

Yes, WHLK is doing well for a station running from a server in a closet.

WMMS-HD2 is BIN, not alternative. BIN is also on 99.1, which I don't see listed, unless their number is rolled into WMMS-HD2. If so, it might be time to switch to something else.

To be fair, Kiss and the Fan aren't really in competition with each other. 92.3 was helped by "All Deshaun Watson, All the time". Q is basically just beating Kiss at it's own game

There's been a dozen or so games this year that haven't televised, airing exclusively online (Apple, Peacock, You Tube). When that happens, people just go to ol' reliable (Hammy and Rosey).

Being in a pennant race doesn't hurt either.

Kiss just brought on Jeremiah (formerly on Q104) for a local afternoon show, the first since Java Joel exited due to budget cuts about two years ago. Hopefully he'll get some time to bring an audience back to the station. WAKS was absolutely awesome when it first signed on, and even those early years on 96.5. Dan Mason, Kasper, Keith Hotchkiss and that original team truly made something special and created some great radio on 104.9 and 96.5 in those early days. Java Joel's first era on the station was originally on nights, tracked from Chicago. They would go after Q104 (even though they were a very adult Hot AC at the time) and even Hot 101 in Youngstown and were clearly having so much fun on the air.

I think a big problem with KISS is the music, which is turning off a lot of listeners in general. Some of the same artists are being repeated more frequently than they should be. It's not just WAKS, but other CHR stations across the US.

That's the same complaint folks out of the demo have had about Top 40 since the format was invented.

Yeah, but back in the earlier years of KISS, the music and variety was better. This is not an "out of the demo" complaint. Even those in the demo are tuning out of KISS.

KISS in the early days - pre-96.5 - was a great station. Once it moved to 96.5, it didn't feel like the same station. (I know it was the same station, but it seemed different.) As time went on and the local talent got stripped away more and more, it definitely felt different. 98.1 is definitely a better hit music station (and their very predictable "all-90s weekends" on the big summer holidays are definitely worth tuning into... btw, this weekend coming up should be another one). Back in the day, they went after Q104 because Q back in the late '90s and early 2000s is pretty much what Star 102 is now: KISS was to Q back then what MTV was to VH1 in the height of their rivalry.

I have some audio tapes that I pop in every once in a while from late-2000, and the fact that KISS used to host what they'd call the "treasure chest" and "best buns in boxers" contests at Images Nightclub in Strongsville (which probably isn't even around anymore) on a Tuesday night is something you just don't see anymore. (I know, the times themselves have changed, but still...)

While on the subject of KISS and nostalgia, remember when Clear Channel got every station they had .cc domain names and really pushed that on us? "All of the good .com names are taken! That's where spot.cc comes in!" Oh, I'm dating myself with that one...

I remember KISS going after Q. There used to be those KISS ER promos where the letter Q was always the patient. That particular patient always died at the end of those promos.
