Cleveland Television News Stations

With a lot of talk on radio, how about a break with local television news. Here are my thoughts on Cleveland's...

WKYC/3 - They have a pretty good news product, a stable syndicated line-up, and a decent local talk show (breaks up the Today show, which isn't always a bad thing). All of those things are saving the station given NBC's bad programming over the years. A lot of the personalities - Romona Robinson, Betsy Kling, Jim Donovan, Mark Nolan, Hollie Strano, Monica Robins, Eric Mansfield, and Maureen Kyle among others - are pretty good in their roles on their newscasts.

WEWS/5 - Another station with a solid syndicated line-up, but has somewhat better primetime programming with ABC, and pros and cons for their newscasts. They've got some good personalities with Leon Bibb, Lee Jordan, Kimberly Gill, Pete Kenworthy, and Tracy Carloss among others. Their "On Your Side" unit has gotten better recently with some new additions. However, they got personalities who I like - Danita Harris and Mark Johnson - but whom I've seen on Cleveland.com's Television message board that they think are either not good or in the wrong time slots. Plus, a lot of turnovers over the past few years with personalities, producers, formats, logos, graphics, and what to fill during sweeps. Plus, they have videographers do reports during the newscasts, which can result with mixed reaction.

WJW/8 - Good news product, and both syndicated and primetime lineups. Plus, I like the new morning show "New Day Cleveland" too. However, I think they have morning newscast that is way too long. I mean, 4:30am until 10am? That's a lot of news. What's there to really fill - jokes and Justin Bieber headlines? Not to mention they do news at Noon (a full hour), 5pm, 6pm (a full hour), 7pm, and 10pm. Again, that's a lot of news. Plus, they need to stop with the "Elvis is alive" sweeps reports.

WOIO/19 - What is there to say really? They had the town talking from 2003 until 2008 or so. I mean who can forget Jane Campbell's feud over her children being shown, Sharon Reed posing nude for sweeps, the fallout between Randy Lerner and the station over his sister's 911 tape played on the air, "Are the Browns for sale?," and the countless confrontations. Now, there's nothing really grabbing viewers to watch their news. I don't remember what they really did during sweeps, although I liked the East Side versus West Side reports. I think they need to start changing their anchor lineup, and maybe the format too. The last part though is unlikely since Bill Applegate might stay in his GM post until he dies. Plus, WUAB/43's 10pm newscast is virtually non-existant in the ratings.

What are your thoughts and opinions?

3 kind of has a steady as she goes approach. Romona Robinson and Jim Donovan are pretty much institutions over there for their longevity. I'm sure Robin Swoboda will make her presence felt (you gotta believe they've at least thought about doing a Robinson/Swoboda super team just for gits and shiggles) Nolan and Strano have become the quintessential perky morning team, they have a professional weather staff, and the whole roster is a good solid veteran crew.

5 has finally settled in after some early upheval in the post Ted Henry era. Bibb, Harris, and Jordan are all solid anchors who mix and match well during the day (noon, 5, 6, 11). Kentworthy/Gill have brought stability to the morning show. The weather team is OK, though they take themselves too seriously sometimes. and they finally look like they have a good sports crew with Baskin/Cairns/Knott (with Reggie Rucker as the Browns expert, and Dustin Fox doing the same for OSU).

8 is like the old comfy pair of house shoes. Just about anybody that means anything over there (Dawson/McCool/Shaffer/Martin/Bell/Smith/Maglio/Goddard/Bernier/Telich/Mossman) have been there forever. Stability is a good thing in a town like Cleveland, where we usually stick with what we know media-wise.

19 is what it is...lots of sizzle, occasionally some steak. Though Wittman/Dufala are now the longest running evening news team in Cleveland (2002-present at 6 and 11), you gotta believe that soon Sharon Reed will be getting Dufala's gig, with Denise being scaled back to the "B" team (Reed fits in better to Applegate's "Action News" motif). OK morning show (though the double team weather is a little silly). Tancheck needs to switch to decaf, and Zarella/Schwab are decent enough on sports.

WKYC is in an odd position. Their recent line of success and stability has indeed kept the station alive in the ratings in spite of NBC's programming ineptitude - which is the exact opposite of the late 80s, when NBC was the top network and WKYC, then an NBC O&O, was their worst-run and lowest rated affiliate. Of course NBC never cared to be in Cleveland and ran WKYC as a "farm team" for future network talent, aside from Del Donahoo, Tom Haley, Leon Bibb, Tom Sweeney, Donovan and Tom Beres (the latter two are the only holdovers from the NBC O&O days).

WEWS has had their identity stabilized, ironically enough, when their graphics department - along with all other Scripps stations - was outsourced to their Tampa sister station. However, they need a new newsroom, and bad. Previous management turnover and an antiquated website (prior to last year) hurt them considerably... they need some stability.

WJW always has stayed the course ever since Virgil Dominic retired. In fact, aside from the "ei8ht is NEWS" branding disaster and controversial stint by Bob Rowe as GM (where Mark Schroeder was installed as evening sports anchor and Casey Coleman was scuttled off to do "special projects"), they haven't made massive or drastic moves. The length of the morning show (5 1/2 hours) is concerning, but most Fox O&Os and affiliates do the same thing nowadays. I'm still surprised that WJW entered the 7:00PM news arena, but hasn't launched an 11:00PM newscast.

WOIO is what it is. Sharon Reed, Jeff Tanchek and co. are of the "love 'em or hate 'em" category. Their graphics are still the worst in the market (if you want REAL tabloid, look up WSVN-TV on YouTube... WOIO looks like Romper Room in comparison). Ever since WJW flipped their newscast to 10:00PM back in 1994, WUAB's newscast has been a total afterthought... it makes you wonder why they even bother.

Nate-

These days, the 10 p.m. show is Sharon Reed's personal newscast.

She's the solo anchor/star, and it's basically a big toy for her to play with while she waits to be eventually bumped up to the 6 and 11 spot.

I think they also (believe it or not) have a sense of tradition over at WOIO.

They know that the old Channel 43 10 O'Clock News was the seed that eventually grew into what we know today as 19 Action News, so they keep it around for sentimental reasons.

Are you kidding me? They wouldn't keep a beer mug around for sentimental reasons, let alone run a newscast. They have the 10:00 news because they recycle stuff from Channel 19 news and it's saleable. Period.

As a media buyer I see the tv ratings and Channel 3 is in the bad shape considering where they've been. Tim White leaving / weak primetime / Leno at 10 have not helped the situation.
Fox 8 is mopping the floor with everybody. 19 does do well, but when you see the breakdowns it's a less desirable audience. (less income) you'll see Lexus/toyota on the other stations and a lot of pizza/personal injury/kia on 19. They deliver to those clients.

Plus, I think Channel 5 has gotten better once some of the weaker personalities left (i.e. Jeff Mackel, Duane Pohlman, Terry Brooks) and better ones came in.

Then it would still be called "Channel 43's Ten O' Clock News" and not "19 Action News at Ten." But I digress.

After all, when WUAB abandoned their Day Drive studios as quickly as they did - after Maltrite took over programming control and scooted both them and WOIO off to Reserve Square - nostalgia and history no longer mattered to them.

I just saw on Channel 5 last night that they were number one at 11p, with the small text mentioning W 25-54 and A 18-49.

Weeks ago, I saw that Channel 8 mentioned in a promo online that they were number one mornings, at 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, and 10p.

Haven't seen anything with 3 or 19. I guess 19 did poorly as I saw on Cleveland.com's Television message board that they had their worst sweeps ever, but I seriously doubt 19 is going make changes. They manage to win second place at 11p a few years ago with Denise Dufala, David Wittman, Jeff Tanchak and Sharon Reed involved. It seems like they think they can reclaim past glory. We have to see in the coming months.
