Cleveland Tower Location Questions

I see the Cleveland TV/FM towers regulary but am not sure what is what. I know the original towers (WKYC, WJW, WEWS, WVIZ) But what about the rest? And, what FMs do they contain? WKYC has no FM on it. 105.7 and 106.5 are not on the same TV tower and WNCX is on WVIZ's. According to Radio locator, WMJI is the farthest north and east but I don't think that's right.

This is still up (for now) on the free side of my good friend Scott Fybush's pay wall...this will tell you just about everything you need to know:

http://www.fybush.com/sites/2004/site-040212.html

I don't think anything significant has changed since Scott wrote that in 2004...well, aside from some minor AM changes (WCCD/1000 flipped away from Salem, WHK is back with Salem on 1420 doing talk, but as far as I know all the facilities are in the same place).

At some point, the TSoTW archives will be subscription only, though well worth it with a rate of as little as $15 a year...

Thanks for the link. Now I remember seeing that article. But, since that was written, where did WQAL go? And, according to that article, there are no FMs on channel 19 or 55. Is that still true?

WQAL is now paired on the WNCX tower at the WJMO/1300 (nee WERE) array.

As for WVIZ, they are no longer at this site. They were in dispute with CBS Radio with regard to installing their digital transmitter... recall that prior to the analog shutdown, WVIZ-DT was run at very low power because of this. They since moved to WKYC's digital tower.

WKYC-TV's analog tower, which also hosted AM/1100 and FM/105.7 in the 50s, 60s and early 70s, came down late last year.

AFAIK, both WOIO and WBNX's towers still are by themselves.

That could very well explain WNCX's reticence to putting the WVIZ-DT stick on that tower.

I totally forgot to mention that in this thread, and I'm the guy who wrote page-after-page-after-page blow-by-blow of this whole situation in 2009!

I think WMJI is up high on the WBNX Channel 55 tower. And WDOK is on the Channel 61 tower.

Indeed, it would appear.

WMJI/WBNX: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS...?appn=100993158&qnum=5140&copynum=1&exhcnum=1

WMJI (FM), is licensed for 16.0KW ERP at 344 meters HAAT. Also using this tower with a separate radiator is WBNX (TV) Channel 55.

WDOK/WQHS: http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/AsrSearch/asrRegistration.jsp?regKey=116529

Note the owner, WQHS parent Univision. The link to the ASR is from WDOK's FCC records.

WDOK has an aux authorization that appears to be (haven't dug through yet) on the WUAB tower.

If Scott Fybush is around, he'd know this stuff without looking it up. :D

OK. I'm looking at WOIO, WQHS and WBNX (ignoring WKYC, I have them identified). Is that the correct order east to west? And, it looks like each has (at least one) an FM on it. What am I seeing? I've verified the remaining TV/FMs.

WBNX and WOIO are the ones that are right next to one another in the park (West Creek Reservation??). So I think if you are looking east to west it would go WKYC, WOIO, WBNX, and WQHS.

That's basically correct; WOIO is due north of WBNX/WMJI, in between WQHS/WDOK (to the west) and WKYC/WVIZ (to the east).

A great resource for identifying what's what and who's where is the Google Earth tool from FCCInfo.com. It's free and easy - just follow the instructions on the right side of this page: http://fccinfo.com/fccinfo_google_earth.php and you can see not only what stations are licensed on each tower, but also the microwave paths between towers and studios. It's an incredible tool!

Thank you Scott for information on that resource..Using it, i've been able to narrow down the location of new station WJEE-FM as just off Cleveland Avenue S. (Rt. 800)..Near Sandy Valley Community Park and the East Sparta Branch of the Bank of Magnolia..Still waiting on FCC test approval..

Towerjunky, not sure if you are from the area or not but if you drive up West Ridgewood in Parma you get a really good view of both WOIO and WBNX. I know you used to be able to pretty much walk up to them, but I believe the park is undergoing some renovation so I'm not sure what's open to the public right now and what is not.
