107.9 - K300AP Sunnyside, WA (KYKV)/surprisingly, the KFFM spur signals that have been ruining this frequency. At 35 miles, this is the farthest I've heard those spurs so far. Spurs are probably 50W at least. Couldn't hear the ones on 106.5-106.7.

I know Cliffdell is in the foothills off 410, but I'm a bit surprised how many stations you got from the West side of the mountains.

You're not using your G8 anymore for FM?
 
The G8 is in ragged shape. One day, I went to go grab it and it fell on the floor, breaking the antenna off 100% like a twig. :( Had to put loads of tape on it, may need to get a new part for that antenna.
G5 is dead. It died a couple of weeks ago. RIP Grundig G5: June 2007-June 2014. :(

I can sympathize. I'm the King of busted antennas. But don't take my word for it.....just ask Mrs. Cyberdad! :)
 
G5 has been abused a lot, I hate to say. Antennas breaking off of it, no AM reception for a few months, sent off to Nevada for that; and a lot of work on it. But still 7 years, hundreds of AM logs and many E-skip openings on FM on that radio. May need to get a used one on eBay.

They don't make radio's like they used to. I've broken many. However, I still have my very first DX machine a Zenith Trans Oceanic. I got it in 1961. It's been refurbished a few times but it still runs.
 
Sorry to hear about the G5 breaking down. Maybe you can fix up the G8 with a new whip from Radio Shack, some glue, & some solder.

I've been fortunate. I don't have a portable that has decided to go sideways. DX-398 had an intermittent -- it was the battery connector. That's about it.

The Superadio is pretty well bulletproof. My old boombox, which I still sometimes use for DXing, is on its second whip antenna. Still works, though.
 
I remembered one other "abuse" moment with the G5 - when I was in Bellevue, I put new batteries in the radio, and I started seeing white smoke coming out of the compartment. Needless to say I took that da*n thing out right away and left it without batteries. Had to open it up the next day and fix it!

Have NO idea but I did see a smidge of white smoke and immediately took them out before they would explode.

I had something similar happen to my DX-370 when I wired the DC plug coming from a wall wart backwards (center positive instead of center negative) by accident, and plugged it into the radio. Didn't see smoke, but smelled burnt electronics.

Took the back off, and there was a little diode that was burnt, so I replaced it. Luckily the radio's circuits weren't damaged. Still works fine.
 
I think I remember it having a burnt smell to it. But now that my G5 is dead, it is likely going into the trash can. Trying to fix the antenna wire it just came entirely off. (for FM/SW). That wire after 7 years has gotten incredibly fragile.

Why don't you just get some more substantial wire and solder it back on? I've done similar. Most radios have enough room inside the back to tuck in some wire. If the AM's dead, you could still use it for FM.
 
The FM is now mostly dead (the antenna wire). Want to know the real reason why it should go in the trash? Unfortunately, as I was trying to tape the antenna wire back on , the speaker wire came loose and snapped off. I've tried to reinforce the connection and it is to no avail. With no speaker/audio it is a waste. I don't know if I can solder that wire back on the REALLY tiny connectors...

I haven't seen the inside of a G5, but on the internet I've seen an internal pic of a G3, and if the G5's internals look similar it looks like if you got a soldering iron (not a solder gun -- get a soldering 'pencil', an iron with a thin tip) it shouldn't be too difficult.

The green backing on the PCB keeps solder from going all over the place, so you'd just be heating the solder point where the wire connects to the PCB. You just hold the wire to the solder connection and tap it with the iron 'til it melts over the wire, and that's it. It would be worth trying if you're thinking about tossing the radio in the trash.
 
We'll see. I don't have a lot of ironing materials right now however. But if I can revive my G5 from the dead this way, it would be awesome.

Your unIDed country is the one out of Wenachee can't remember the calls. Hopefully my G8 lasts me a long time. We just recycled the radio I originally had in my room after 20 years. It probably still worked, we just didn't use it since I got a new radio with an iPod hookup about 3 years ago. I still have a headset I got for free in 2000. It still works great, but doesn't have any batteries in it at the moment. I've broken one antenna before, it was last summer on an old little radio I found at my grandpa's house. I put the antenna up to try and get KOMO-FM to check traffic before we left, and as I put the thing back down, it bent and snapped off about halfway up. That darn thing sticks like you wouldn't believe! I wonder if my uncle was able to repair it somewhat.
 
KKRV - thanks. I was thinking KKRV but it could have been KCMB La Grande OR as well which I just caught a week ago for the first time since a 2010 vacation to central Washington (when I lived in Bothell).
