closed-circuit public radio

i recently discovered www.nprstations.org (completely restricted to NPR stations), www.apmstations.org (most of the site needs no log in but some content is restricted to public radio stations that air programs from American Public Media (powered by Minnesota Public Radio (my public radio service))) and www.prss.org (Public Radio Satellite Services, from NPR distribution(https server completely restricted to public radio stations))and i heard of stuff like DACS(can anyone tell me what it means) and a content distribution service called "ContentDeopt". The DACS messages consist of program rundowns, special info regarding operations, operations schedules, and reports of technical difficulties, schedule changes, and more.

here are a few examples of DACS messages reporting technical difficulties (which they refer to as "Program Impairments"):

Regarding:
"NPR Newscast Saturday 0200" 07-A5H-36228
Saturday 070721 0201ET A66.9 and Stream #2

Stations note that due to talent error there was silence from 020347 thru
020352ET and again from 020359 thru 020406ET. This affected both Legacy
channel A66.9 and IDC Stream #2.

"Legacy" refers to the Legacy satellite receiver used to receive public radio networks and "IDC Stream #2" refers to one of the "ContentDeopt" live streams that public radio stations can use.

note the unique use of the title and a unique program ID to help public radio stations find the program on "ContentDepot"

this was from a service outage from the BBC World Service

does anybody know more about this? ???

When I worked at WEKU Richmond as a student employee back in the eighties, DACS was a on teletype. As an operator we were required to check it as often as the AP and weather wire though I don't remember what DACS stood for.

The DACS runs off the old legacy system and is basically a OS-2 dedicated computer that just sits there to provide info on shows and do sat switching I believe on the old system. Content Depot is the new system that will be the ONLY system when (LOL and IF) they get everyone on-board with it. The information that can be found on the DACS deal can also (I think) be found on a specific web site when utilizing Content Depot. Content Depot has been riddled with problems, many of them being created at the program producer level do to lack of knowlege and many times slopiness. PRSS which is responsible for getting the stuff out via the sat. and NPR really, really want to kill the old crap and just go Content Depot as soon as possible as it's costing them boatloads to run a paralell system as they are currently doing it. It will allow for more re-use of sat. spectrum for more programming too.

Today's Impairment:

Stations taking "Collector's Corner" 07-G47-07141 070723 1800ET Legacy B72.0 &
IDC Stream #12 note:

The remaining CD playback was started late, resulting in an outage from 185144
through 185750ET and the closing material terminated with program audio still
in progress at expiration of allotted time.

This problem was present on both Legacy channel B72.0 & IDC Stream #12.
A Retransmission is being planned for Tuesday 070724, time and channel unknown
at this time.

today's impairment:

Please be advised that an impairment occured on the subsequent transfer of
files for "Michael Feldman's Whad'ya Know" which was sent this Saturday, July
21. The Legacy and ContentDepot streams were not affected, however the
impairment occured in the formatting of the segments -- only two files were
delivered instead of the anticipated seven.

A switching problem occurred in the NOC which caused this situation and is in
the process of being corrected. Properly segmented files have been posted to
the ContentDepot and have been delviered to station file receivers.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you notice this
type of problem in the future you may contact the NOC at
(800)433.1283

Today's Impairment's:

#1:

The 1000 hour of the BBC World Service began a few seconds upcut on
ContentDepot channel 14, due to a tuning problem at the NOC. The legacy system
was not affected

#2:

The NPR NEwscast at 1001 ET began a few seconds upcut due to a tuning problem
at the NOC in Washington. The legacy system was not affected.

This all begs the question... Why use the system if it's so erratic?

R

lot's of stuff to get to, so let's get started:

Next week's The Writer's Almanac was set up with the wrong air window. The start date was 7/25 instead of 7/26. This error resulted in the programs being sent out on the wrong day with the wrong cut IDs.

The window start date has been reset to today, the episode will feed again today, as usual, with the correct cut IDs.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please be advised that last weeks "The Song is You" episode titled 'Somi
REVISED' is posted with the wrong air-window and therefore the files are
assigned the wrong CUT ID's.

This problem is in the process of being corrected -- files will be deleted and
the begin air date will be changed so that the Cut-ID's can be corrected as
soon as possible.

IMPAIRMENT IN TODAY'S FEED OF "THE TREATMENT":
Feed is missing first 10 seconds. The complete program can be downloaded at
