Closed Threads

Hello all,

If you have been checking this board in the last few weeks you will notice that there have been a few threads closed by, I assume, a moderator.

They have assumed some responsibility as moderators and are probably acting in their best effort in this capacity.

Most of us are guests on this board and with that in mind I know that the host makes the rules. I do not benefit from some of the personal attacks that I have read, but when there is a back and forth about community radio topics which reflect each poster's opinion and honest disagreement is expressed, I would hope each poster's comments would be displayed to be considered and be open to comment from us visitors.

What do you think?

I don't think a good, clean debate should be shut down. It's when personal statements are made is what spoils it..

I don't post much but I do come here often. I enjoy debate when it stays on topic and when the involved parties strive to make their point. Argument is another issue..

I started a thread a while back and didn't understand why it was closed here and moved to engineering. I guess the mods have their reasons..

We will close a thread depending on the situation. If we feel that the topic is getting nowhere, and people are starting to attack personally (you can kind of feel that), then we will close it. It is still viewable to all the public to see. I understand about much of the open discussion, and that is why I try to keep closing to a minimum. Frank, the other moderator, has his reasons as well. These are just my reasons.

As for your post that was moved, even though much community radio is "kits", the advertising of a kit job thing really didn't fit, especially when the site seemed to be more for electrical components. That is the reason why I moved that topic.

Thanks much for posting, all comments are welcomed.
______________

Just pointing out that the closed thread "Real Part 15 power at transmitter" already had come to a conclusion as shown by posted statements of the two main contributors to it. There had been no posts to it for quite a few hours before it was closed down.

In cases where a moderator sees a problem with thread content, maybe the first step should be to email the party or parties involved, and try to guide the thread in the "right" direction. Maybe that was done in the above case, but I didn't get anything like that, at least.

Suggest that closing a thread has an element of censorship to it, and maybe should be reserved for cases where cooperation was not received from posters after it was requested.

I feel the same way Jake does. We're trying to maintain an open discussion, but being mindful of each other's opinions and intellect. If a thread degenerates into name-calling and such, I'll close it. There have been many cases where I probably should have closed a thread, but left it open instead.

Thanks for your reply.

You wrote "We will close a thread depending on the situation. If we feel that the topic is getting nowhere, and people are starting to attack personally (you can kind of feel that), then we will close it."

Is the closed thread below "FCC enforcement actions" wherein the poster warns how easy it is to exceed FCC limits and appears to be trying to keep people out of trouble an example of what you are referencing?

I did not close that thread, though I am sure who did has a good reason for it. It looks like it was a borderline post however, from what I am seeing. People were starting to personally attack almost, calling each other nuts and uncredible. However, like I said, I did not close the thread, so I am not sure 100% why it was closed. If you would like to discuss any of this anymore, send me out an email. I will be glad to discuss this topic off-board with any of you.
______________
