CMG’s ‘The Bone’ New Flagship Station Of Tampa Bay Lightning

I doubt they had to "wrestle" the rights away. CMG probably offered a full market FM signal (and then some) plus the station's regular primary format really isn't impacted by evening hockey games... end of story. CMG gets the marketing exposure and promotional opportunities and it's a pretty good fit. These sports teams aren't gonna settle for simply AM anymore... even if the AM has a small FM translator.

They did the same thing for USF sports a couple weeks ago.

Though most think of Florida for its sun, beaches, warm temperatures, watersports, Orlando theme parks and a vacation or retirement spot rather than "ice hockey", according to ESPN the Tampa Bay lighting had the highest attendance of any team in the NHL this past season.

Personally, I'd have thought that title would go to one of the teams up north where the climate is cooler, winters are cold and snowy, and sports like ice skating and hockey are played by hoards of young people.
