C'mon Conway, quit phoning it in!

I'm probably the 2nd or 3rd biggest fan of Tim Conway Jr. on KFI.

But even I'm giving up. It's as if Timmy has stopped putting in the mental prep work he was doing 1-2 years ago, and it's finally starting to really show.

If I venture an uneducated guess, Jason Insalaco was enough of a buddy to make Tim really dig in to segments and own the topic. I remember his commentary on audio was insightful, cruel, and most importantly: HILARIOUS! As talented as producer Misty is, I just don't think she's able to motivate as well. I was listening Friday to Conway playing audio ripped straight from Pretros and Money. The trouble was, Conway & Steckler's commentary wasn't insightful. It wasn't cruel. And it most certainly wasn't hilarious. What happened?

I think TCJS can turn it around. Maybe a few bad books will put fear in his eyes and he can revive the "best show on the radio" (as said by Matt 'Money' Smith just last fall). With Insalaco gone, I'm afraid it's been a slow, downward trajectory. And it's bad when, even I, Mr. Conway Fan #1 have pretty much given up.

Conway & Steckler need to realize that the KFI audience is far different from the "frat boys" who listened to them when they were on KLSX. These same "frat boys" also enjoyed Tom Leykis, Adam Carolla, and Frosty, Heidi & Frank. As we learned when "AMP Radio" replaced the talk format, having a large "frat-boy" audience does not guarantee success.

I don't mind a little frat boy humor. But it's gone from 30% fart jokes up to 75% since Insalaco left.

Where are the insightful, humorous takes on the day's news? Heck, I'd even take the Kardashian bashing again. It's really a shame. It was the last talk radio show I listened to EVERY DAY. Now I catch a bit of J&K, Handel, etc., but only when I'm flipping by and it catches my ear.

Last night (January 15) Tim Conway Jr. played a tape of Huell Howser singing California Here I Come. Howser, who for 18 years hosted California's Gold on KCET, died January 7 of prostate cancer. Earlier on January 15, a Huell Howser memorial service was held at Griffith Observatory. It started at 3:30. Fans began showing up at 9 am. Many drove hundreds of miles, coming from the remote towns that Howser had visited. Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge arranged the service. There were lots of speeches and a helicopter circling overhead. The service concluded with a tape of Howser singing California Here I Come. It was played several times while everyone sang along. Howser sang the same way he talked---very folksy and not always on-key---but it was nice of Conway to play the tape.

I feel kind of bad I started this thread. I was listening to Conway the last two nights and the show was actually pretty good. A lot of good laughs.

I missed the tribute, but that does sound nice. Radio needs more of that.

Did anyone listen to Gary Hoffmann on KFI this morning? He read an e-mail he got (while on the air) from someone using the name "FireConway." Gary commented, "I won't say the rest of the e-mail address but it's not that hard to figure out." He wondered how anyone could hate Conway so much as to use "FireConway" as a screen name.

TC Junior effortlessly proves that a not-ready-for-primetime loser can achieve "Biggest Shill West of the Rockies" status.
